AUTOBIOGRAPHY IN FIVE CHAPTERS

1. I walk down the street.
There is a deep hole in the sidewalk.
I fall in.
I am lost… I am hopeless.
It isn’t my fault.
It takes forever to find a way out.

2. I walk down the same street.
There is a deep hole in the sidewalk.
I pretend I don’t see it.
I fall in again.
I can’t believe I’m in the same place.
But it isn’t my fault.
It still takes a long time to get out.

3. I walk down the same street.
There is a deep hole in the sidewalk.
I see it is there.
I still fall in… It’s a habit.
My eyes are open.
I know where I am.
It is my fault.
I get out immediately.

4. I walk down the same street
There is a deep hole in the sidewalk.
I walk around it.

5. I walk down another street.

Our academic coach Kristin Lancaster has training in Orton-Gillingham, multi-sensory approach to reading with proven results. Orton-Gillingham is an effective language-based multi-sensory approach to reading that is direct, systematic and sequential. Through the Orton-Gillingham approach to reading, struggling readers - specifically dyslexic students, find success. These students need a multi-sensory approach in which new concepts are introduced and practiced differently than in the traditional classroom.

During the first session, the student will be assessed, and instruction will be tailored to meet each student’s unique needs. As the student progresses and the skills become automatic, the student sees improvement. As student learns skills and concepts, the program builds. Most struggling readers thrive with this type of multi-sensory instruction and as a result, self-esteem builds. Activities are engaging and predictable. Teaching students to decode accurately and efficiently improves fluency and in turn supports comprehension, leading to success!

The Retreat at Ponte Vedra Beach

The Retreat at Ponte Vedra Beach is a child and adolescent psychiatric clinic and family wellness center founded by Dr. Theresa Randazzo-Burton, MD and Dr. Elizabeth Winings, DNP. The vision to establish a primary prevention model for psychiatric/mental health care and wellness promotion in North East Florida that delivers child-centered, family-informed care, integrated into the community led to the development of this practice.

By creating an alternative to current mental health care, which is often fragmented, individuals have the opportunity to receive mental health care in a multidisciplinary setting. We provide evidence-based, high-quality, medication management and psychotherapy to our patients. We incorporate physical activity and nutrition guidance in our approach to psychiatric care. We have educators on staff that seek to facilitate learning environments for academic excellence.

We focus on helping families discover the values and principles to guide them towards the balanced and functional lives they deserve. When individuals understand themselves and their past, they have the opportunity to impact the present and to change and grow in the future. Healthy family dynamics may prevent, alleviate, or assuage stress, psychological symptoms, and psychiatric illness.

The Retreat at Ponte Vedra Beach is committed to strengthening the core of individuals and families by teaching principles of healthy living, developing strong self-concepts, and restoring relationships. Healthy families will improve the overall health of this community. We aim to be the foremost lifestyle medicine provider in the area so that children and families can thrive in their homes, schools, and communities.
