This heart month, NEWS CENTER Maine told the remarkable story of an 84-year old man who survived a cardiac arrest at the golf course.

Afterwards, his cardiologist, Dr. Lila Martin of MaineHealth Cardiology in Scarborough, spoke with reporter Leeann Stapleton about the difference between a heart attack and cardiac arrest, why her patient was so lucky, the causes of cardiac arrest and how to prevent heart disease.

Recycling is making a difference at MHMMC Portland.

The hospital is on track to recycle nearly 300,000 cans and bottles per year, and nearly all the money from redemptions is going to important causes like MaineHealth Barbara Bush Children's Hospital, DAISY Award funds, the Sustainability Committee and other care team–supported initiatives.

Thanks to the Food Services team, the cafeteria alone is projected to raise about $8,000 annually for MHBBCH.

The MHMMC Sustainability Committee, Volunteer Services and Environmental Services worked together to bring Clynk — a recycling redemption program — to the care team. After piloting the Clynk collection program in 10 units last spring, it's now expanded to more than 30 units and departments.

💖 The Wellness Council at MHMMC Portland made sure we were all able to spread some love this Valentine's week! Care team members, patients and visitors got to create mini-water color valentines, learn about musculoskeletal health and walk away with a heart shaped stress ball to keep the good feelings close at hand the rest of the day. We ❤️ these positive vibes! 💖

Shannon, a nurse in MHMMC Biddeford’s post-anesthesia care unit (PACU), has earned a DAISY Award for Extraordinary Nurses for her care of a patient hospitalized with sepsis. The nominator shares how Shannon’s compassion and reassurance brought her comfort:

“When I arrived in PACU, I awoke to a calm, warm and smiling nurse whose presence immediately grounded me. She reassured me with quiet confidence that everything was going to be okay, and the compassion in her voice was what I needed in that moment.

Throughout my recovery period, Shannon not only cared for me clinically but tended to my husband with equal attentiveness, providing updates whenever possible and easing his worry. At a time when I was physically exhausted and emotionally overwhelmed, she preserved my dignity.”

This experience — and the way she made me feel throughout — is something I will never forget. Shannon is a shining example of nursing excellence and wholeheartedly deserving of this recognition.”

The DAISY Award for Extraordinary Nurses was created to recognize and honor the compassionate care nurses provide every day to the patients they serve. It is celebrated in over 5,400 healthcare facilities and nursing schools in 34 countries.

Congratulations, Shannon, and thank you for your patient-centered care.
