Update from Alicia: This is long overdue and I wanted to offer my apologies. I've had a few updates from Jason over the last week or so that I would like to condense into one. Garrett is back at school. He is repeating kindergarten this year with the same teacher he had last year. Jason is working closely with the school on his IEP (individualized education plan.) Garrett has an aid that stays with him every day to work exclusively with him. Right now he is still "hands on" and has not been released to play on play structures or anything with wheels. He gets to take his lunches/recesses in the library with a rotation of friends. Jason and Amy are really looking forward to the day when he can be released from being "hands on."
Recently they found out that Garrett will be getting a new TBI (traumatic brain injury pediatrician) since his current doctor is moving. They are doing different therapies throughout the week. He still has trouble with balance on his left side. Sometimes he seems not be aware but then the next minute he is back. The connections in his brain are still reforming and he has to be very careful not to bump his head over the next few years.
Yesterday marked 3 months since the accident. They are still moving forward with the legal proceedings but things have been delayed. There isn't anything new to report. They are just waiting for the next court date. I will keep you posted as I can.
Thank you again for your continued loved and support.

Update from Alicia: This Saturday we are having a welcome home party for Garrett. It will be held at the home of Marlita and George Burnette in Oregon City. The party will be from 2-5. Since the party is at a family members home we would rather not post the address here. If you think you might be able to attend please send me a private message and I can get you directions. If anyone coming wants to help out with a snack food or desert feel please post below. :)

Update from Jason: Thank you Alicia Neil for the update! I want to begin by thanking EVERYONE involved with Garrett's recovery starting with Amy Amy Wiggins who has been there for Garrett and I from the first MINUTES of this traumatic event! She ran to the top of the street and did what needed to be done and has NOT stopped fixing our lives even for one second!!!!!! I have never meet a more wonderful person in all of my life. I could go on HOURS & HOURS about this fact. Amy was there even though some tried to minimize her roll at every step of the way. Most people would have turned and run at the first incident. Love you more than you know Amy. Like a Million to the infinity squared.....plus a little more than that. I hope to marry you as soon as possible. Next all of my family has showed support for us like I've never felt before and I am so blessed to have to have every single one of you. Now for our freinds (especially neighbors) have taught me how wonderful people can be. Every one of my neighbors had to witness, helped get first aid (even to Mr. Dallas when his life was literally turned upside down) minuets after the crash, have not left our sides with support, when we didn't understand yet that we needed it, I/we will never forget!!!! I hope our family will get to return this love, under other situation not as traumatic I pray, somehow some way. Things I remember right off the bat: Nicole Wright & Terence Wright who gave me prayers and helped for Garrett when I was sinking into shock, because I knew Garrett had been taken from us, brought me back to Earth and told me God would love and care for Garrett. You both were there for us THANK YOU! Ryan & Rozanna Myers Burroughs as I recall Ryan sprung into action and helped direct at the seen, helped get tools to extract family members, and even helped emergency crew to understand priorities of victims to be helped 1st! (I'm hoping to recall as best as possible) Ryan and Rosie help organized meals and was an organizational contact THANK YOU! The Morganson's who had kind words for us to the media, expressed everyone's concerns about our road (speedway at times) being dangerous, and helped with support after crash THANKS TO ALL OF YOU! Josh Corey who recognized I was starting to drift into insanity came to me when I needed it and to Allison Corey who helped out with meals, YUM! Not to forget to note everyone helped with meals. And even Chase helped where he could. THANK YOU TO THE COREYS! The Burdick's (who have to live in path of distruction when the curve of the road proves too hot to handle) have helped out with love, support, and meals.......like they have for 25+ years THANK YOU! And to all the close neighbors who were first responders and rushed to the seen to help out and came by after the dust had setteled to make sure everyone was alright THANK YOU! I am so worried to leave ANYONE out I will say there are more thanks to be given and will post more as they come to my mind. Thank you! Thank you! THANK YOU ALL!!!!

Update from Alicia: Yesterday was Garrett's sixth birthday and the last day he spent in the hospital. Late in the afternoon he was discharged and he came home for good. We had a small birthday party for him at his house. He was so happy to be home. From what I heard the hospital staff went together on a neat birthday gift for him. One of the staff members got him a special monkey because he and Garrett share a name and a birthday! What are the odds?
From here I am not sure how often updates will be made. Garrett will continue to have a pretty intense therapy schedule as an out patient. He will still need a wheel chair for a while. We could still use prayer for the ongoing criminal case. We will update on that as we can. Also there will be a coming home party for Garrett next weekend. I will update when I have more details. I want to leave you with a picture from his birthday.

Update from Alicia: I'm sorry it has been so long since I have made an update. Last weekend Garrett got a "pass" to go home for the night. He spent the evening with his parents, grandparents, siblings, aunts, uncles and cousins. It was so good to see him at home and smiling. He was able to take a wheel chair home and loved it when people would drive him fast over the bumps in the yard. On Sunday it was back to the hospital and back into the normal routine. It seems like every day is a full schedule for him. The hospital has fun things like art, therapy animals that come for a visit and even a clown. Overall I think they are taking very good care of him. He is anxious to come home though. Right now we aren't sure when that is going to happen yet but as soon as I have more information I will get it to you. Again, we are so thankful for all of the continued prayers. Garrett will still have a long recovery even after he is home.

Update from Alicia: It was a pretty awesome day for Garrett. He did some walking on his own! He is still pretty wobbly but moving in the right direction. He was very feisty and playful with my husband and I. He asked us to keep tickling him and for uncle Scott to smell his feet. I think he really wants to play hard but knows he can't yet.
Today he went to see the physical therapist and the art therapist. The hospital also offers different arts/crafts projects throughout the week. When we left he was heading to make bracelets.
I'm going to post a link to the video Amy took today of Garrett watching. I hope you all can see it because it's pretty amazing.

Update from Jason: Today we went to the indictment of the DUII driver. To say the least we are shocked at probable outcome after he gets sentenced...... I'm not going to talk about details of case as I really am in the dark about how law works but what I will say is today's info in court......, I gathered, that he is charged with 2 assault III charges (there are others less charges also). The sentencing for assault III is.......if you are curious Google it and you might be surprised??? In other news Garrett is still progressing forward but at a slow pace. Can't wait to see you home buddy!!!!

More from Alicia: Right now the legal end of this situation has been really tough on all of us. For those of you that are praying please pray specifically for the lawyers fighting for Garrett Megan and Melissa and the judge and jury as they move forward. Also, for peace for our family no matter the outcome of the legal proceedings.

Update from Jason: Latest news today. Today is the one MONTH mark in the hospital. I have never even had to spend an overnight for anything for myself. Amy & I just had the weekly team meeting with all of Garrett's doctors and specialists. Garrett is progressing well with all of his therapy's. They are giving us the date of 7/31/13 for possible release with a couple overnights at home in the middle to see how he copes. Also another note is the Grand Jury is going to hear Melissa Clark's story about what she remembers. After her details they will vote to see if the driver of the vehicle that wrecked into her, Megan, Garrett will be indicted or not. Tomorrow we all will be back for the indictment if he will be going to trial for his DUII and crash. I've been unusually on edge as these dates have been getting near. Last night I think I may have gotten two hours sleep at most..... I know everyone else has been suffering also so I hope things will settle a bit more after Garrett returns home!!!

Update from Alicia: I simply cannot believe how much progress Garrett has made since Sunday. I was so surprised when I saw him standing with help today! He even worked on climbing a step and getting back into his bed. Today he was able to eat some of his lunch on his own but he gets tired easily so he had some help. I'm sure all the therapies he is receiving is helping his progress. He will be getting physical therapy (large movements,) occupational therapy (practice with daily activities) and speech therapy. I'm not sure what the schedule is going to be like moving forward but today he had all three.
It was so good to see the light back in his eyes. He was very happy to see his room packed with visitors this afternoon. We asked him if he liked home or the hospital better and he said the hospital. It gave us all a good laugh. I think he is looking forward to his 6th birthday which is coming up in about two weeks and the huge homecoming party everyone keeps talking about.
I really believe we have witnessed a miracle with this sweet boy. I can't believe how much progress he has made. I truly believe that all the prayers, thoughts and well wishes from across this country have made the difference. I am going to leave with a short video I took of Garrett today saying "Hi."

Update from Jason: I didn't get a chance to post this video yesterday. Great news! It is like Garrett "woke up" yesterday. When Amy and I walked through the door he was sitting up and smiled when she saw us :-). For the first time since the accident I could see Garrett's charm sparkle. We brought him some clothing from home. He picked out the outfit he liked best and actually put on his own socks!!!!! Garrett also was saying a few words that were quiet and hoarse but he said them with his typical glowing smile. We asked him who came to visit him and he cracked a smile and whispered Amy.......later I finally got him to say dad. Lol The art therapist brought up a Match Box jet airport and he was flying the jets.....and crashing them, so typical Garrett style. He is completely off all pain meds and also the Methadone & Adavan used to wean him off the fentanyl used to keep him in the induced coma. I also just realized that I have yet to see this boy shed a tear!! The night before Garrett decided he was done having his feeding tube in his nose. He was in a middle of a feeding routine and before nurses knew it he handed tube, he just removed from his nose, back to the nurse. So the response to that was he got to eat his first whole meal of "softend" food. So a day packed full of surprises. After seeing him interact this way I can honestly say that we are going to have our Garrett back with his love and charm waiting to fill our life again. I can't wait to see today's progress. Next major step will be to get him mobile out of the chair. Who knows maybe, like in my dream last night, he will greet me at the door, walk right by me towards the exit only looking back to confirm I was right behind him, hunched over, ready to sn**ch him up, running full speed knowing we were not staying there another day. Ok not today...........but soon! Lol Not soon enough but we are going to take it when he's ready. He's a tuff little man. Will post whatever dazzles him today as soon as I can.
