Welcome to Hands On Occupational Therapy, or HOOT for short! HOOT began in 2014, providing in-home pediatric OT services. Its goal was to provide individualized and professional services in the most supportive, convenient and natural environment…your own home. HOOT connected so successfully with families in the Portland area, that it needed to add a clinic space! It is located inside Spectra Gymnastics with access to a dreamy sensory gym.
** Anticipated Opening: October 2025 **

HOOT is a huge advocate for parental involvement in the child’s sessions in order to create consistent and successful home programs. As the name HOOT implies, we strongly believe in the power of hands-on learning. Using a multisensory approach, your child will learn best when they have opportunities to see, touch, hear and move. I hope that you find useful the tips and advice provided on this page, and I encourage you to visit my website at http://www.hoothelps.com for more information on the services that I offer.

Scooters are clearly fun for children, but when used a certain way you can also incorporate strength challenges into the play!

Know a child who has trouble maintaining attention and constantly seeks movement during seated work? Try a wobble cushion! It can be sat on or placed under their feet while sitting or standing!

HOOT Helps you find Therapy Tools for endless fun at home, while also incorporating important skill development.

Squigz is a favorite of mine...why? They:
~ help strengthen hand and wrist muscles
~ promote mature grasp (thumb and first two fingers)
~ assist with shape / letter formation
~ can be used for midline crossing
~ HOOT TIP: working on an incline further promotes wrist extension for a more mature grasp

Our Story

Welcome to Hands On Occupational Therapy, or HOOT for short!

**Since COVID-19, my practice has expanded to also include an educational platform designed to help ALL caregivers in knowing how to more effectively implement developmentally appropriate play in home. Check out www.hoothelps.com for more info.**

I am a licensed pediatric occupational therapist whose passion is working to help children with developmental delays, primarily related to fine and visual motor skill development. Delays in these areas can impact a child's successful participation in their self-cares which may include their handwriting, dressing, feeding, and overall play. I am a huge advocate for parental involvement in the child’s sessions in order to create consistent and successful home programs. As the name HOOT implies, I strongly believe in the power of hands-on learning. Using a multisensory approach, your child will learn best when they have opportunities to see, touch, hear and move. I utilize tools from the Handwriting Without Tears® curriculum, which uses whole-body activities to help a child retain learned information. I hope that you may find useful tips on this page, and I encourage you to visit my website at http://www.hoothelps.com for more information on the services that I offer. ~Deborah Babkes, MS, OTR/L
