A randomized controlled trial recently published in the journal Nature Medicine talks about the positive outcomes of a personalized diet program using an app, versus the standard USDA dietary guideline.

While the study points to positive outcomes for body weight and triglyceride levels from following a personalized plan delivered via the app (which uses data to analyze user's blood lipids, glucose and other markers), the benefits of personalization received by working directly with a credentialed practitioner is next level.

Working with a practitioner means they are committed to translating the science of nutrition to an individualized approach targeted for where you are in the moment. They are guiding and supporting you to where you want to be, leveraging science-backed approaches and assessing multiple variables and strategies, individualized for you, based on your body responses. That is personalized.

Good practitioners also help with what can often be the hardest part: mindset and habit change. That's personal💫

People are tired of accepting anxiety and mood challenges as status quo. Metabolic dysfunction can play a significant role in psychiatric imbalances and even disease. Diet changes can create a strong foundation for how we feel mentally. Dr. Georgia Ede published her book last week which boldly outlines how diet can change mood. Her research using ketones as an alternative fuel to help quiet negative psychiatric symptoms is groundbreaking. I was lucky to participate in a group that studied keto for mental health under Dr Ede and I've seen how the ketogenic approach has impacted so many with a range of conditions from generalized anxiety to epilepsy. The American Nutrition Association also recognizes the benefits of science-backed ketogenic nutrition to improve clinical outcomes in a broad range of chronic metabolic conditions.

If you are interested in how diet can improve attention problems, mood swings, food obsession, depression and even chronic conditions, then pick up a copy of Dr Ede's book. Its a fascinating read!

Well hello! 🦋 ain’t this smoothie purty? I think so, and it’s tasty, healthy, and made with blue algae spirulina and other foods high in beneficial nutrients that support gut health, immune modulation and it has anti-inflammatory properties (aka the blue spirulina reduces histamine response). It’s also super easy to make. If you have been to Erewhon in LA you will recognize this beauty 💙Start with a hefty scoop of coconut cream for healthy omega 3 fats, a bit of coconut water 🥥or purified water, half an avo 🥑, half a banana 🍌 almond butter, pineapple 🍍 and a scoop of collagen protein plus a dash of vanilla extract (or vanilla powder). Top with a teaspoon of blue spirulina and whirl. Pour half in a glass mason jar and sprinkle a bit of the blue spiro around the edges and top off with rest of the smoothie blend. 👌🏻

Weeknights in January can get monotonous trying to come up with nutritious family meals every single evening. Keep it simple with a mix of: greens, fiber, omega-3’s, immune-boosting vitamins, protein and antioxidants. This weeknight ‘greens and beet’ salad is tossed with champagne vinegar, pomegranate and olive oil dressing and topped with toasted walnuts, basil and pomegranate seeds. Loads of variations are possible, but this one is sure to please, especially when topped with grilled sliced tenderloin or cooked black lentils! Buon appetito! 🥗🥬💜 recipe link in bio.

Metabolic syndrome is clinically defined as a group of 4 risk factor conditions that occur together. They are health risks all on their own, but when combined, they inordinately increase risk for heart disease, stroke and T2 diabetes. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
They ugly 4 are:⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
1) High blood pressure (hypertension)⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
2) High blood sugar⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
3) High cholesterol⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
4) Abdominal fat ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
What often is not discussed is how ANXIETY contributes to, and/or is the result of, the above 4 conditions. What are some of the effects of long-term or sustained anxiety on our body?⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
There are many, but a recent report out this year highlights the positive effects of diet and nutrition on the following anxiety-related conditions: ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
1) Oxidative stress (brain fog, nervous system impairment)⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
2) Insulin resistance (slow/no metabolism, high blood sugar, cravings, fatigue, tingling in hands/feet, skin tags...)⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
3) Inflammation (brain fog, fatigue, lack of focus, arthritis...)⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
4) Gut/microbiome dysbiosis (leaky gut, heartburn, COPD, constipation, colitis, to name a few)⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
Diet and nutrition can reduce/restore optimal metabolic function. Anxiety is as much a function of metabolic disease as it is a physical/psychiatric condition. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
and food can help. 💚🥬🥑🧄🧠🌿🍄🫐🍓🥥🥝🍆🥦🥒🌶🫑🧅🍠🥗🍏🌱⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀

Its winter squash season!⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
Every type of winter squash has a particular pronounced flavor. Compared to their summer cousins, winter squashes have a denser texture and flavor with a satisfyingly firmer flesh that holds up well in hearty soups, stews and casseroles. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
Delicata's skin is edible (with a hollow middle) so it is easiest to prepare just sliced into rounds and roasted with a pinch of salt and a drizzle of olive oil. It tastes like candy and is addictive! Kabocha is a japanese varietal with a lovely, starchy, chestnut-like texture. Peeled, cut into chunks and roasted, it is great tossed with a miso, sake and sesame glaze. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
Rich in carotenoids, fiber and vitamin C, roasted squash should find a place on your plate in the coming months.⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
The author of Japanese Farm Food likes to touch and listen to her vegetables prior to cooking them, citing the rich nourishment they provide. A California native now living in Japan, I love what she says about growing and eating the vegetables on her remote farm "You have to accept them, not force your will upon them" ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
