family visiting postpartum can often be a big stressor. you should never feel like you have to entertain someone in your postpartum recovery. unfortunately, not everyone understands how crucial this time period is to you and your baby’s mental and physical health. i usually tell families to make a list to put on their fridge of all the things that need to be done around the house. this takes you out of the trap of them holding the baby and you doing everything!

help from family is greatly different than help from a postpartum doula. yes, family can be helpful with chores and things that need to get done around the house. however, family may not have the skill set or knowledge that a postpartum doula has. i have extensive knowledge in newborn development, feeding patterns, breastfeeding, bottle feeding, and lots more! while family can be super helpful during this time, it does not replace the incredible support a postpartum doula provides.

while you are supporting your baby in the nicu, friends and family often feel helpless on how to support you. most of the time they aren’t able to visit due to visitor restrictions and their support may be limited to outside the hospital.

if you are finding family is constantly asking you what they can do, here are some ideas! it can be nice to get outside the walls of your hospital room to take a walk outside with a loved one. it’s also helpful if they can watch your dog or an older sibling! as well as helping out around the house with dishes or laundry. and let’s face it, hospital food sucks. so some home cooked meals or gift cards are always welcomed!

i love cooking nutritious and comforting foods for my postpartum families. you body just went through a huge change and food plays a large role in how you recover. even though we want to focus on nourishing your body, your food doesn’t have to be boring! lots of color and warm, comforting foods are key

in this picture, i have a grilled cheese made with sourdough, nz grass fed cheddar cheese and fresh mozzarella with sautéed cabbage and kale and some raspberries to top it off!

message me now to create a postpartum plan that works for your family and helps your body recover! 🥰

it’s okay to feel all those intense feelings! so often we hear that we should be grateful because we “have a healthy baby.” while that is true, it’s okay to feel sad or angry because your birth didn’t go as planned. it’s okay to feel upset because you had a high risk pregnancy and felt like you couldn’t enjoy it. you are allowed to feel grateful and happy with your baby while also feeling sad or angry about your birth.

as a postpartum doula, i hold space for you and listen to your story. i am not here to tell you how to feel. i am here to support you.

you are not spoiling your baby by holding them too much! your newborn was just in a dark, warm, quiet environment for about 40 weeks. when they’re born, they’re welcomed into a bright, cold, noisy world! this is a big adjustment for a baby and they need support. by holding them, you are making them feel safe and loved. it is impossible for you to do that too much!

you cannot spoil your baby by loving them too much. in fact, evidence shows that when newborn’s needs are met, they are much more likely to want to be independent as a child. this support doesn’t have to fall all on you, either. postpartum doulas can help your baby feel loved while you are caring for yourself.

during interviews, families sometimes ask me what a “typical” postpartum doula shift looks like. i tell them every shift is different but has the same theme, supporting you however you need in that time. sometimes families have lots of questions. sometimes families are overwhelmed with laundry and dishes. sometimes moms are concerned with how baby is eating. other times, parents just need a nap! and sometimes parents need someone to just listen.

postpartum doula care is whatever you need it to be! it is so tailored to how you are feeling in that moment.

the best of both worlds! doula and nurse!

so many of my clients appreciate my diverse background. while i can’t give you medical advice as a doula, it’s nice to have someone who knows what’s normal for you and your baby and what’s not. especially when you or your baby have more medical complexities!
