Your spine is your body’s central highway. Everything runs through it. Every sensation and signal, every movement and response.

When your spine is strong and supple, you move through the world with more ease. When it’s not, you feel it everywhere: stiffness in your hips, tension in your neck, pain, limitations, do I need to go on?

This month, we’re turning up the heat on spinal health. Expect classes that move through flexion, extension, rotation, and lateral movement: the full range of motion your spine craves. We’ll strengthen the muscles that support it and open the ones that have been holding too tight for too long.

Because here’s the truth: A happy spine doesn’t just mean less back pain. It means more resilience, deeper breath, calmer mind, and a nervous system that feels safe again. It’s about feeling at home in your body.

Let’s talk about the most over-hyped, under-estimated part of your workout: ab exercises.

Here’s the truth; doing sit-ups or crunches won’t magically burn belly fat. That’s not how the body works. But does that mean core training is a waste of time? Not at all. It depends on where you are in your fitness journey and what your body needs right now.

Core work is often introduced in rehab because it helps people reconnect to movement after pain or injury. Learning how to stabilize the trunk and re-engage the shoulders, hips, and spine is a powerful first step toward moving without fear. But if we stop there and never progress, those simple exercises stay basic and never translate into real-world strength.

For new movers, developing core strength early on creates safety and confidence. It gives your body the foundation it needs to try bigger, more complex movements without risk. For seasoned athletes, core-specific exercises may not build tons of muscle, but they refine movement patterns, improve agility, make the brain-body connection sharper, and help maintain muscle mass.

And here’s the kicker: you don’t always need to isolate the core. Every time you lift, carry, push, or pull heavy with good form, your trunk is working hard to stabilize you. The goal is to build enough resilience in your midsection that your daily life (and your workouts) feel strong, stable, and pain-free.

So, are ab exercises critical? Not always. But are they one of the building blocks to get you to your next level of strength, independence, and longevity? Absolutely.

Ever get frustrated with yourself because you feel like you’re “doing it wrong?” Here’s the truth: your body doesn’t care if your Warrior II looks like a magazine photo or if your elbows touch your sides in curls. It cares that you’re moving.

And here’s the truth. Most people don’t move enough. Until you shoot for your dream to become a competitive body-builder, form doesn’t really matter, getting in reps and minutes does.

If you have goals to build a specific muscle or open up a very particular range of motion, then alignment and form can help. For the average person, don’t let perfect get in the way of good.

Movement is medicine and you don’t need to measure it in millimeters to reap the benefits, just get on the mat.

✨ Meet Deb ✨

Deb was born in Ypsilanti, Michigan and spent 20 years as a clinical social worker in an elementary school in Ipswich, Massachusetts.

Her work was all about caring for people, and that passion shines through when she teaches. To Deb, movement is more than exercise—it’s essential to living a full, vibrant life. She sees it as an investment in your future self, and she loves the magic of a room full of people moving and breathing together.

She’s got a playful side too: at 10 years old, she quit dance to join a bowling team (and yes, she regrets not sticking with dance). If she could be any animal, she’d choose to be a falcon or another powerful bird, soaring high above it all.

When asked what she wanted to be when she grew up, Deb’s answer was simple and perfect: happy. And that’s exactly the energy she brings to her classes—joy, presence, and a reminder that this practice is about so much more than the poses.

Her advice for anyone new to Blaze? “There are so many amazing teachers at Blaze. Try all the different teachers and class types and you will fall in love.”

Come move, breathe, and connect with Deb. You’ll leave class feeling stronger, lighter, and more yourself.

✨ “Vote for Pedro”… or just show up at Blaze in costume this Halloween. At Noon on October 31, we’re throwing down a Halloween Costume Contest and it’s going to be flippin’ sweet. Costumes are highly encouraged—we’re calling on all Pedros, Kips, Uncle Ricos, Debs, and Napoleons to bring your best moves (and yes, bonus points if anyone pulls off the iconic dance).

Picture it: Uncle Rico trying to throw a football over the mountains, Kip perfecting his self-defense skills, Pedro promising that if you vote for him “all your wildest dreams will come true,” and Napoleon just asking if you’re going to finish your tots. That’s the energy we’re channeling in this class.

If you win, you might just get your own 📸 Glamour Shot posted online.

Expect a solid Blaze sweat, plenty of laughs, and a chance to work hard in the studio while celebrating Halloween with your favorite community.
