🦫With Ground Hog Day coming up on Monday and as we put the hands of Spring into a tiny rodent let's talk about how to avoid that Ground Hog Day feeling in therapy:
🦫To avoid feeling stuck in therapy, openly discuss the stagnation with your therapist, redefine your treatment goals, and actively apply skills outside of sessions.
🦫Be Honest About the "Stuck" Feeling: Tell your therapist, "I feel like I'm not making progress" or "I'm not sure what we are working on anymore". This can shift the focus to what is not working.
🦫Do "Therapy Homework" Between Sessions: Behavioral change requires practice outside the 50-minute hour. Use journaling, tracking emotions, or practicing, for example, breathing exercises.
🦫Revisit and Update Treatment Goals: Goals can evolve. Re-evaluate what you want to achieve, breaking larger, overwhelming goals into smaller, actionable steps.
🦫Change the Routine or Format: If sessions feel repetitive, ask to change the format. Try focusing on body-based cues, using imagery, or changing from intellectualizing to focusing on emotions.
🦫Keep Track of Progress: Keep a log of your, for example, weekly wins, however small, to remind yourself that progress is happening, even if it feels slow.
