On June 14, my colleague Mitch and I, along with our bicycle built for two, will embark on a 70-day cross-country bike ride. Starting on the Pacific Coast in Oregon, we will pedal more than 4,000 grueling miles before we reach our destination—the Atlantic Ocean. This is an incredible challenge that will test both our physical and mental endurance, but this trip is not about us. We are biking in order to raise money and awareness for cancer research. My four-year-old cousin, Cooper, passed away from a rare form of brainstem cancer in 2008. He fought the disease for 13 months, inspiring many people with his courage and bravery. Although Cooper was afforded the best medical care available, his chance of surviving longer than a year was a mere 3%. It seemed that despite the hospital’s greatest efforts, my family could only pray that Cooper would experience a miraculous recovery. Ultimately, he did not. Over 1.5 million Americans are diagnosed with some form of cancer every year. That means more than 1.5 million families are exposed to the tragic loss of a loved one like Cooper. This cause is important to us, and we would like to play our part in contributing to the cure. In addition to raising money, Mitch and I will be performing random acts of kindness for cancer patients across the nation. These acts will include delivering flowers, completing household chores, listening to life stories, and assisting families in any way that we possibly can. There are two ways you can contribute to our Ride Against Cancer:

1. Donate directly to the American Cancer Society through our website at www.gofundme.com/alexmitch

2. Support our patient interactions and other expenses associated with our Ride Against Cancer at www.gofundme.com/thebikerboys

Every donation (no matter how small) helps.

Sure was a pleasure getting to know him! Such a great, kind, and unselfish man!

John Malmborg’s battle with cancer ended Oct. 25, but the veteran St. Peter entrepreneur and community volunteer is remembered as a good and gracious man who touched lives in quiet, simple ways.

Asking for prayers, love, and support for my family, the Kennedys and Larsons. No family should ever have to endure the loss of a child, let alone two. My cousin Julieanna Larson couldn't have had a more loving family.

Mitch and I were fortunate to be able to spend some time in Kennewick with Julieanna and family on our trip. We will never forget her funny stories, love for animals, and the joy she brought to everyone. No words can describe this heartbreak.

Julieanna and Cooper, brother and sister gone way too soon.

We’d like to thank all who were a part of our Ride Against Cancer, in honor of Cooper Larson.

It’s been over a month since our trip ended, and we’d like to take the time to thank everyone who contributed to our Ride Against Cancer! Family, friends, strangers, bike shops, businesses, news teams, -- we cannot thank you enough!

It took us two months to bike nearly 4,000 miles from the Pacific Ocean to the Atlantic Ocean. We had countless meaningful experiences across the country, in which we shared hope, joy, and something special with people affected by cancer. We wish the whole world could experience the gratitude and meaningfulness our gifts provided the people we visited – all made possible by our supporters.

Many people have asked us which state was our favorite to bike through. But the truth is, it wasn’t the sites we saw that made our trip so unforgettable, but rather the people we met and the friends we made who made our journey so amazing. We’d like to thank everyone who showed us such generosity and hospitality along the way. We’re fortunate to have met such lovely people and we will never forget the kindness we received!

Due to the generous donations we received, we have some money left. We plan on continuing our random acts of kindness towards people who’ve been affected by cancer, as long as our funds allow.

I’m back at school now and volunteering twice a week with the LiveSTRONG program at the Mankato Family YMCA. I get to use my experience and personal training skills to help cancer survivors regain their strength during or after treatment! Cancer survivors are a special group of people and I enjoy working with them! Mitch heads out east at the end of the month to continue his training with the Army. We wish the best of luck to everyone we met on our journey and we miss you all!

Sincerely,
Alex and Mitch

I'm happy to announce that I will be volunteering with LiveSTRONG at the Mankato Family YMCA this fall!

LiveSTRONG at the YMCA is a 12-week program for cancer survivors who meet twice a week for an hour and a half. Participants work with trained YMCA staff and volunteers to build muscle mass and strength, increase flexibility and endurance, and improve functional ability. In addition to physical benefits, the program provides participants a supportive environment and a feeling of community with their fellow survivors, YMCA staff, and members.

Understanding that physical fitness is the gateway to one’s recovery, it’s also key to enhancing energy, attitude and the cancer survivor’s quality of life. Participants in this program not only receive the physical and mental edges necessary to get “back in the game,” they enjoy this achievement with others experiencing the same goals, challenges and triumphs. Group classes foster camaraderie and friendships that are rewarding at any stage in life, and crucial in many. LiveSTRONG at the YMCA is free — you don’t have to be a YMCA member to be a participant.

If you or anyone you know may be interested in working out with wonderful trainers such as myself, please contact me on here or Teresa Langworthy at livestrong@mankatoymca.org!

The other day, we met with a cancer survivor, code named Quidditch. We took her out to eat, cleaned her car, and painted her nails! It was fun!

Last night we arrived at a campground in St. Johnsville, NY late at night. Adam, the owner of the campground let us stay for free. We were warmly welcomed to the Stevens' campfire, where they fed us 8 hot dogs, 2 bags of chips, local cream soda, and lots of cookies. Jeff and Chris were on a canoe trip with their dad Craig, a cancer survivor. We stayed up late talking about Life, cancer, and our trip.

In the morning, they gave us lots of fuel (eggs and bacon) and jet fuel (coffee)! Then owner Adam came by and gave us donuts! It was a nice breakfast! We had a great time with the Stevens and it really lifted our spirits, as we've had lots of headwinds and hills lately! Thank you!
