Thinking about when to introduce a phone to your child?

You're not alone, and there's no one-size-fits-all answer.

The key isn't age or because everyone else has one.
It's about preparation and readiness: theirs and yours.

Kathy Van Benthuysen at Digital Prep Academy specializes in helping parents navigate this decision with clarity and confidence. She breaks down the digital readiness skills kids need before getting a device and how to help them get there if they aren't ready.

She's hosting a live workshop next week where you'll get the practical tools you've been looking for.

🎯 Live Workshop for Parents:
“How to Know if Your Child is Ready for a Phone and What to Do if They’re Not.”
Wednesday, November 5 • 12:00 PM
This isn’t about guilt or guessing, it’s about giving you clarity and a plan.

We’ll cover:
✅ What “readiness” actually looks like
✅ How to talk to your child if the answer is “not yet”
✅ What to focus on instead to prepare them
It’s free, live, and practical because every parent deserves a clear next step.

If you have a teen, it's a good idea to have some on hand, just in case, because you hope you never would need it, but you never know.

Did you know that you can order FREE naloxone (Narcan) if you’re a Kansas resident? 👇

60% of young adults (18-25) in Kansas said in a recent survey that they did not know where to get naloxone. All you have to do is search “free naloxone in Kansas” or visit dccca.org/naloxone-program to request a free naloxone kit, provided by DCCCA through funding from the Kansas Department for Aging and Disability Services (KDADS) and the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration (SAMHSA).

Naloxone is a life-saving medicine that can reverse the effects of an opioid overdose or poisoning in people of all ages. The CDC says that using naloxone will not harm someone if you give it to them and they are not actually experiencing opioid poisoning or overdose – so it’s better to be safe than sorry. Order naloxone for yourself and tell the young people you know about this, too!

Here's a great primer about the difference between cognitive and affective empathy and it just might be one of your greatest allies in parenting teens. Separating my own emotions from my kids and not taking responsibility for them is a challenge.

Discover why understanding others’ perspectives—without absorbing their pain—can transform your relationships, boost resilience, and prevent burnout.

AI and chatbots are hot topic right now. We're right to be cautious, especially with our kids. Dr. Friendtastic offers a balanced view and great strategies for opening a dialogue and providing guidance and boundaries.

"Conversations work better than lectures," and I couldn't agree more.

Helping our kids navigate technology is often involves differentiating between what's fact and fiction and learning to make informed choices. It's about what's in our best interest and what's for profit and why that can be dangerous. Kids love a good WHY to help them become good consumers and make good choices. Parents do our best, but we cannot be everywhere, especially online.

Let me know what parts resonated for you or if you have some anecdotes about kids using chatbots.

What parents can do about the blatant and subtle dangers of AI companions for kids.

This applies to parenting, particularly with teens. When you’re in the thick of fight, chances are you’re not gonna win, which is also the wrong attitude - needing to “win.”

So when it becomes a fight. Pause. Step back, slow down and decide if it’s “worth it.”
