RELAXING INTO THE SPACE WHERE PEACE AND HEALING TAKE PLACE is what the Expressive Arts are all about. Whether your health challenges are physical or emotional, discover how healing is supported through writing, music, meditation, visual art – painting, drawing, creating a collage – or playing with clay. All of these activities and many more encourage your body to activate its own inherent ability to heal! The Expressive Arts are about the “process not the product”—the process of discovering how your inner mind can express itself in an outer form—a form that can be viewed, talked with, understood and released.

What are the Expressive Arts? The Expressive Arts are a way to clarify and express unacknowledged feelings and render them into an understandable form. It is a process that allows the inner mind to express itself in an outer form… a form that can be viewed, talked with, and finally understood. The concept of art as healing has been documented as long as any recorded history; however, it has only been within the past twenty years that the value has once again been recognized. The Expressive Art modalities focus on Meditation and Guided Visualization, Music, Visual Art and Journaling/Writing. Each of these modalities support and enhance the healing quality of the other. A brief meditation to quiet the mind and center your awareness is the best way to begin any Expressive Art activity. Listening to relaxing music helps ease you into that place where it is possible to access stored thoughts and emotions. The visual component of the Expressive Arts is where you give life to these unearthed emotions either through drawing, painting, molding clay, creating a collage or any number of ways. And finally engaging the left analytical side of your brain by writing or journaling adds the meaning and clarity that allows healing to take place. The Expressive Arts are a way to open the door for your mind, body and spirit to start down the road to wellness. A road that will hopefully become a wonderful, lifelong journey to healing and wellness.

General information

Expressive Art Workshops Include the following: Visual Art: Through drawing and the use of various art materials including paint, chalk, clay, colored pencils, collage, etc. you will learn how easy it is to facilitate this amazing form of emotional and physical healing. What surfaces through pictures and images can give meaning, clarity, and profound understanding in an amazing way. Meditation: Meditation is a balance between your mind, body and spirit that incorporates all of the senses into one place. Modern research has shown that meditation can change brain activity, improve immune response, lower heart rate, blood pressure, and reduce the body’s stress response. It is a process that teaches how to use the power of the mind to help heal the body. Meditation is easy to learn… the benefits are well worth mastering the art. Guided visualization: Guided visualization or guided imagery is a meditative practice that incorporates a story into the meditative experience. A story that will gently guide you to a beautiful, calm, peaceful, safe, healing place. Your mind processes thoughts and ideas as images rather than words so this can be a powerful form of healing. Guided Imagery is a safe and loving way of delving into the subconscious to look at and explore many of the unresolved issues of your life. Writing/Journaling: Writing or journaling is a powerful tool for healing; it is a form of releasing that hopefully you will begin to use on a daily basis. Writing helps explore feelings and emotions as it helps you sort out decisions and concerns. Writing gives you a sense of control, clarity and voice to your life. Your goal with this type of writing is to put pen to paper and let the words flow without censoring. In addition to the healing value of writing, it is fun. Who doesn’t love a good story? I promise YOU have one. Music: Music and sound have a vibratory quality that actually changes your physical body. Extensive research compiled over the last 30 years on the benefits of music and healing has been astounding. Music has been shown to quickly alleviate stress, elevate moods, reduce pain, boost the immune system, facilitate emotional energy shifts, promote healing and simply make you feel better. There are hundreds of studies on music as a health-care intervention, more than any other creative healing modality.
