🎃 Final Tip or Treat! 👻

As we wrap up AAC Awareness Month and say goodbye to October, I’m feeling grateful for such a busy month filled with all my favorite fall things plus supporting communication, celebrating progress, and connecting with wonderful families! 💬✨

Tonight’s reminder:
Be kind to all trick-or-treaters!
Some may use words, signs, AAC devices, eye gaze or gestures — all forms of communication are welcome and valid. 💛

Here’s to a safe, sweet, and inclusive Halloween for every voice! 🍬

🎃🍂🧡 As someone who loves to decorate and craft, I 💯 thought a scarecrow for the Princeton Parks and Rec Halloween Festivities would be right in my wheelhouse….. turns out -NO-it was not!😂. “Down but not out” was not only my 2025 vibe but the theme of my scarecrow! Loved making this cutie, learned a ton, bought a mallet (game changer!), and I’ll be even more ready for next year!! Looking forward to enjoying every second of this last week of October!🧡🎃👻🍁

🎃 Tip or Treat 🎃
💬 AAC Tip: Honor all forms of communication — gestures, signs, devices, words, sounds, pictures, facial expressions, and more!

That’s the heart of Total Communication — valuing every way a child connects and expresses themselves.

✨ Model without expectation. ✨
Repeat. Reflect. Respond.
Because every small, sweet attempt at communication worth celebrating. 🧡

🎃 Tip or Treat Week 3 !!

🧡 This week’s treat: a low-tech AAC bracelet and Halloween social story from Breezy Special Ed — one of my longtime favorites!

Being from the 1900s, I’m a huge fan of low-tech AAC methods like this one. They’re simple, effective, and honestly don’t get enough love these days!

🗣️ Why it’s a hit:

~Models core words like want, more, stop, help

~Encourages choice-making and participation during crafts

~Easy to print, cut, and tape together — no batteries required!

Grab the bracelet template + social story free on TPT from Breezy Special Ed and add it to your Halloween craft rotation.

🧡 Because everyone deserves a voice — high tech or low!

🎃 Tip or Treat Week #2 🎃
Tip: When encouraging your child to talk, try to avoid using “say” or making direct commands like “Say ball” or “Tell me dog.”

👻 Here’s why:
When we tell a child to “say” something, it can put pressure on them and shift communication from being fun and meaningful to a performance. For many early communicators—this pressure can actually make it harder for them to use words naturally.

✨ Instead, try these connection-based strategies:

~Model, don’t demand. Say the word yourself many times during play (“Ball! You got the ball! Rolling the ball!”).

~Make it fun. Use silly voices, songs, or sound effects. Children learn through joy and repetition.

~Follow their lead. Talk about what they are interested in—this builds engagement and motivation.

~Model the same word or phrase often—aim for 20+ natural repetitions during play!

💬 Children learn language best when they feel relaxed, playful, and connected.

🍂🧡 October is here—my favorite month!
It’s AAC Awareness Month, it’s full of cozy fall vibes, pumpkins everywhere, and of course, our playful squirrel friends. To celebrate I will be posting a Tip or Treat each week! 🐿️🎃

✨ Weekly Tip or Treat ✨
This week’s treat: practicing “No” (my favorite self-advocacy word) with The Leaf Thief! 🍁📖
Empowering little voices to set boundaries—even in playful, seasonal ways—helps build confidence and communication skills.

🍁 Do you love fall, pumpkins, and all the cozy things too?

🪸❤️ New Episode Drop!

Some of us were so sick when we recorded this one 🤧 … but we pushed through because I really wanted to share my experience about being a longtime pediatric SLP who’s new to private practice and how the Coral Care Provider Growth Program has been a HUGE support. 💪🌱

In this episode, I talk about:
✨ What it’s really like to be new in private practice (the messy + the exciting)
✨ How Coral Care gave me tools, structure, and encouragement
✨ Why I finally feel like I’m building a practice that fits me and my families

It’s real, it’s honest (stuffy and all 🤭), and it’s for anyone who’s wondering what stepping into private practice looks like.

🌟 Celebrating 30 Years in Speech-Language Pathology! 🌟

Over the past three decades, I’ve had the chance to work in a variety of settings, take (much needed) breaks, explore different age groups, and grow both personally and professionally. Through it all, one thing has never changed: my love for helping children find their voices. 💖

Every journey looks a little different, and mine has been full of twists and turns—but each experience has deepened my passion for supporting communication and connection. Here’s to many more years of helping little voices shine! ✨

✨ Hi, I’m Kendra, the SLP behind My Sweet Speech! With 30 years of experience, I’ve had the joy of helping children find their voice through playful, personalized therapy.

This season, many of my clients are growing up and starting full-day kindergarten 🎉—which means I now have morning openings available for new families.
