Why is my ferritin still low… even though I’m taking iron?
This is one of the most common and important questions in functional medicine.
And the answer is rarely “you just need more iron.”
Ferritin is your body’s iron storage system. So when it doesn’t improve, it’s a signal that something deeper is interfering with how your body is absorbing, storing, or using iron.
So what could actually be going on?
It may be that the gut is not absorbing nutrients efficiently. Or that chronic inflammation is blocking iron from being properly utilized. Sometimes, hidden nutrient deficiencies are needed to help iron work in the body. Other times, hormonal imbalance or metabolic stress is disrupting how iron is regulated.
And here’s what many people don’t realize: iron is not just about energy levels. It plays a direct role in brain function, influencing oxygen delivery and neurotransmitter production. When ferritin is low, it can show up as brain fog, fatigue, anxiety, low mood, or difficulty focusing.
So a more important question becomes:
What is preventing the body from actually using the iron that is already there?
Because when we look deeper and address the root causes, the body often knows how to restore balance more effectively than we expect.
