Blue Line proudly supports Greg Owen for Sheriff in Fremont County!
My name is Greg Owen, and I am running for Fremont County Sheriff.
This decision came after a great deal of prayer and reflection. It came after many conversations with God, and it brings a level of peace I have not felt since I first set this goal for myself years ago.
I have worked for the Fremont County Sheriff’s Office since I was 21 years old and have been with the agency for over fourteen years. I started my career in the Detention Center, where I was promoted to Corporal after two years.
In 2016, I attended the POST Academy and moved to patrol. After six months working patrol on my own, I was promoted to Patrol Sergeant during a time of major transition within the agency. Those first years as a sergeant were some of the most challenging of my career. I was learning how to be a patrol officer while also being responsible for leading a shift.
I supervised deputies who had more experience than I and had to earn their trust quickly. That period required growth, accountability, and ownership of decisions, and it shaped the way I lead today.
In 2020, I was promoted to Patrol Lieutenant. In 2024, I was promoted to Captain over patrol and investigations.
Each role brought increased responsibility and a clearer understanding of the challenges facing our deputies and the agency as a whole. I chose law enforcement because of what I experienced growing up.
My childhood was difficult. I was exposed to addiction, instability, and situations in and around my family that no child should have to witness. I saw firsthand how those environments affect families and communities. Those experiences stayed with me and played a major role in my decision to enter law enforcement. My wife, Bailey, and I are CCHS graduates, high-school sweethearts, and are now raising our four children in Cañon City. Like many parents, I want my children—and yours—to grow up in a community where families feel safe, citizens are protected, and those who break the law are held accountable. I am running to protect the safety, freedom, and way of life that make Fremont County a place families are proud to call home.
I have watched this community change over the years, and I am deeply concerned about the direction it is heading. Crime has increased in Fremont County, creating a dangerous environment for families in a community many of us remember as safe and secure.
There are serious issues within the Sheriff’s Office that concern me about its future. The detention center is critically understaffed. Patrol continues to lose experienced deputies to agencies that can offer better pay and more support.
Confidence in leadership across the agency is at an all-time low. Patrol deputies are stretched thinner now than at any point I can remember. Calls for service continue to rise while staffing continues to decline. Shifts are operating with minimal supervision and limited personnel to cover a large rural county.
Despite this, our deputies continue to show up and do the job professionally and selflessly. Morale in the sheriff’s office has suffered, not because they lack dedication, but because they feel unsupported by those in the current administration.
Deputies solve other people’s problems every day, often at great personal risk. They deserve leadership that will stand in front of them, fight for them, and address the problems they face instead of ignoring them.
I have raised concerns about safety, staffing, and morale for years. The warning signs have been there. Continuing down the same path we have been on puts both deputies and the public at risk. I cannot stand by knowing these problems will continue or worsen if leadership is not challenged.
The citizens of Fremont County deserve a Sheriff’s Office that is proactive, transparent, and engaged with the community. Deputies deserve to know their leadership supports them and values their service. This is a partnership that has been missing for too long. I care deeply about this community and the deputies who serve it. I believe this is the path God has placed in front of me, and I will not run from that responsibility.
If you believe in strong leadership, community safety, and supporting the men and women who protect Fremont County, I ask for your support. Please help spread the word, volunteer your time, get involved, and if you are able, consider supporting this campaign financially.
Respectfully,
Greg Owen
