Call for Abstracts

The Critical Care Transport Medicine Conference (CCTMC) will once again feature a Scientific Forum with poster presentations of original scientific research. Poster presentations will be formally judged during the conference on April 14th and an Outstanding Research Award will be bestowed to the best research presentation. Accepted abstracts will be published in the Air Medical Journal. Abstracts presented at other meetings during 2025-2026 will be considered. If abstracts have been published prior they will not be republished in the Air Medical Journal. Our goal is to nurture and provide an appropriate forum for research in air medical transport.

Deadline: Friday, February 6, 2026
5:00 p.m. EST

Abstracts must be sent as E-mail attachment in MS Word format (Macintosh or Windows) without names or institutions listed. Objective, methods, results and conclusion sections should be included, 3200 maximum number of characters allowed (including spaces). Use single line spacing. Leave one line of space between paragraphs. Left justify all text. Word documents should have 1 inch margins, and text in Times font, 12 point size. Please use the “word count” feature under “Tools” in Word. The E-mail cover should list names of participants in the study, institutional affiliations, funding sources, and identify the person who will present the poster at the conference*. In addition, the E-mail cover must state whether or not the abstract has been or will be presented and/or published prior to April 2026. The reference must be supplied. Submissions should be affiliated with a critical care transport program or an academic center. Submissions should be sent to Dr. Lauri Bolton at Lauri.bolton@hhchealth.org and must be received by 5:00 p.m. EST on February 6, 2026.
*Travel expenses and CCTMC registration are not covered for the person presenting the abstract(s) at CCTMC.

The Air Medical Physician Symposium (AMPS) is a full day of cutting edge education and discussion. Critical Care transport physicians, medical directors, and clinicians present on various topics and participate in vigorous, interactive panel discussions. The symposium is focused on controversial and clinically relevant issues so that attendees can distill best practices and inform clinical protocols. Speakers are drawn from national and international critical care transport programs.

AMPS (in conjunction with NAEMSP) will be held January 28, 2026 at the JW Marriott Tampa Water Street (in the Veranda Room). Seven (7) AMA PRA Category 1 Credits™ (accreditation pending). View the agenda and register for AMPS here: https://ow.ly/GIP350XxGCy

AMPA is proud to share important new findings from "Association Between Prehospital Blood Transfusion in Helicopter Emergency Medical Services and Survival: A Retrospective Population-Based Cohort Study." This work adds to the growing body of evidence underscoring the critical role HEMS clinicians play in delivering lifesaving interventions before patients ever reach the hospital.

Thank you to the researchers and air medical teams whose efforts continue to advance the science, safety, and effectiveness of prehospital care.

NEW Research in the Air Medical Journal! Prehospital blood transfusion via physician-staffed HEMS is associated with IMPROVED SURVIVAL in patients in hemorrhagic shock!

In a nationwide registry study (2020–2023):

•Only 0.3% of 24,776 HEMS patients received type O PRBCs en route
•These patients were sick (SBP 83 vs 138 mmHg) and mostly trauma-related
•After rigorous propensity-score matching → prehospital transfusion linked to 2× higher odds of survival to hospital discharge (OR 2.09, 95% CI 1.05–4.18)

New in Air Medical Journal!

Airway management in profoundly unstable patients is among the most challenging tasks in critical care transport.

At the Air Medical Physicians Symposium Lite, sponsored by the Air Medical Physicians Association, experts identified best practices and key research needs for intubating patients in profound shock.

Findings highlight the importance of:
✅ Optimizing hemodynamics before intubation
✅ Considering reduced sedative dosing or paralytic-only approaches
✅ Standardized checklists and high-fidelity training

Registration is open for AMPA's Medical Director Core III Curriculum being held April 12, 2026 in Orange Beach, Alabama (as a CCTMC pre-conference course).

The Core Curriculum is presented in three independent modules, which may be taken in any order. Together, they provide comprehensive instruction based on Principles and Direction of Air Medical Transport, the foundational AMPA publication. These sessions are valuable for new medical directors seeking essential knowledge, as well as experienced physicians looking to deepen their expertise. The program also provides meaningful opportunities for networking and interactive, case-based discussion.

The AMPA Medical Director Core Curriculum is recognized and recommended by CAMTS as the preferred background training for medical directors of critical care transport programs pursuing accreditation or reaccreditation.

🚁 Can you really estimate a patient’s weight accurately enough to keep a flight safe?

When minutes matter, guessing a patient’s weight isn’t good enough. A new study from Ornge and the University of Toronto just changed the game for critical care transport teams.
