Our bodies have ways of reacting to stress, these are four common ways: Fight, flight, freeze, fawn. They are evolutionary responses to stress spanning millions of years of human development. Now while some stress can be helpful, being in these aroused states for long periods of time can bring on mental and physical health symptoms. We want to try our very best to regulate our nervous system so it is not in these states for long periods of time, which is not an easy feat.
