No, absolutely not. The lack of flexibility is a great reason to START practicing yoga. It can take a while to achieve the level of flexibility you wish to attain, so I encourage my students to think about progress instead of perfection (especially at first).

Feeling like your body is “a little creakier than it used to be,” yoga can help more than you think.

It supports flexibility, core strength, and healthy aging—without pushing or forcing. It’s never too late to start feeling comfortable in your body again.

I know a lot of folks are joking when they ask this, but I thought I would put it out there anyway in case someone was wondering what to wear to a yoga class for the first time!

You can wear anything you want as long as I don’t see any part of you durning class that I normally wouldn't see… if you know what we mean. I don’t have a dress code, just wear comfortable clothing.

Most folks wear shorts, sweats, or leggings to my class with a t-shirt. Depending on the type class, we may be laying down, sitting, or standing - so you need to be able to move without seams digging in or getting all twisted up.

Of course, you CAN wear yoga pants… but I wouldn’t invest in them if you don’t already have them.

Answer:
My classes are generally pretty relaxing and gentle (even my challenging ones).

The class starts with grounding or becoming centered (which means letting go of what is going on in our lives and turning our attention to what is going on inside ourselves). I explain what we’re going to work on in the class and we take some deep breaths to get started. Then we get started by warming up and getting the blood flowing in our bodies.

After the warm up, we begin the main portion of the practice which will vary from class to class. I'll call out the instructions for the position and how to move into the pose. Many beginners find that the positions can be challenging or unobtainable at first, so I may suggest how to modify the position for newer students. I usually do progressively deeper poses then work on core strength or twists and end with some stretches to cool down.

Finally, the last 10 to 15 minutes of class is dedicated to releasing tension and relaxing. The last pose we assume is Savasana and in it we do guided meditations, progressed relaxation, mindfulness meditation, yoga nidra (yogic sleep), or other relaxation practices that help relieve muscle tension and stress.

Question: Are yoga positions painful?

Answer:
They are not supposed to be!

There shouldn't be any pain, but it isn't comfortable to stretch sometimes. If you get to the point where discomfort turns to pain, that is what we call “your edge”. You want to make sure you don’t go past that edge and cause an injury. In my classes, I recommend modifications to the position or suggest using aids to help with obtaining the pose without pain. I may use blocks, straps, or blankets to help you get into position and keep you free of injury. There are also several poses that are “resting” poses that you can change to if the position becomes too much.

Hello BodywoRx followers! I thought I would share some of the questions about yoga that I get pretty frequently. I figure if one person wonders, there are others wondering the same thing. We'll start with -

WHAT IS YOGA, EXACTLY?

The word literally translates “to yoke”. It references uniting or joining your body, mind and emotions together.

In class, we work on building an awareness of our thoughts, our emotional state, and how we feel physically by paying attention to small stuff - like how we breathe and our body alignment. We try really hard to concentrate on what is going on with us for an hour rather than what is going on in our lives.

The goal is to gain an understanding of how all three parts (mindset, body, emotions) work together while we are in class so that we build resilience. We can’t always control what life throws at us, but we can learn to control our reactions to it.
