Lana girlie was the driving force to me taking back control of my health last year. I was suffering from burn out, brain fog, irritability, crippling anxiety, and stress overload.

I’ve always generally eaten healthy and I live a very low tox lifestyle. But I was ignoring my mental health.

When I became pregnant with her I knew I needed to get my mental health under control. That’s when I dove head first into researching underlying issues that could be causing it to suffer.

*Insert gut health*

Gut health isn’t a fad. All disease starts in the gut. The state of our immune system, metabolism, hormones, cognition, mood, etc is a direct reflection of the state of our gut health.

I always thought my gut health was good. I didn’t suffer from food allergies, leaky gut symptoms like gas, bloating, cramping, or constipation.

I did however suffer from mood disorders, brain fog, fatigue, and irregular sleep. All of these are a direct reflection of poor gut health.

I researched the science behind which strains of bacteria can help repair your gut and improve these things. Did you know not all probiotics are created equal? Some help digestive issues and some help mental health issues.

It’s been close to a year of me taking care of my mental health. What have I seen?

Microbiota Influence: Gut microbiota, the trillions of microorganisms residing in the digestive tract, play a vital role in regulating mood and behavior. Imbalances in gut bacteria composition (dysbiosis) have been linked to mood disorders and changes in behavior.

Inflammation and Mood: Imbalances in gut microbiota can lead to increased inflammation. Chronic inflammation has been associated with mood disorders, including irritability, anxiety, and depression.

Hormonal Regulation: Gut health may also influence hormonal balance. Hormones like serotonin, often referred to as the "happy hormone," are largely produced in the gut. An imbalance in gut microbiota can potentially affect serotonin levels, which can contribute to mood disorders.

Diet and Gut Health: A mother's diet can significantly impact her gut health. Consuming a balanced diet rich in fiber, probiotics, and prebiotics can support a healthy gut microbiome, potentially reducing the risk of irritability.

Stress and Gut Health: Chronic stress can disrupt the gut microbiota composition, potentially leading to mood disturbances. Conversely, a healthy gut can contribute to better stress resilience.

Postpartum Period: The postpartum period is a critical time for a mother's physical and mental health. Hormonal fluctuations, sleep deprivation, and lifestyle changes can influence gut health, which in turn can affect mood and irritability.
