Birth is so magical! This is our client Jessica. She ended up needing an induction at 37 weeks and knew she wanted an epidural, so then how did a doula help or what was the use you asked? Well Jessica knew that because her little guy was going to be early that her risk for a c-section was somewhat increased and she knew that an epidural could stall her labor through conversations with her doula, so her goal was to get a into a good pattern of labor contractions before getting the epidural and that is exactly where the doula came in! We walked and were able to bring that baby down through positions and once her contractions were nice a regular she was able to get her epidural! The process was actually incredibly quick, and sweet Grayson made his debut after about 20 minutes of pushing! It was such a great Birthday! .law

Happy 4th of July from Oak + Valley Doula Co. Last Friday I(Jess) got the honor of helping this sweet babe make his entrance into this world and it was such a magical experience! Mom was able to give birth with no interventions and see her birth plan come to life! Today, was there follow up postpartum visit and we got to work on making sure his latch was good and went over some soothing techniques for when he’s hard to settle, which is completely normal is this newborn stage! I’m grateful every single day that I get to call this my profession and even in a world that seems so broken right now, I am truly humbled and thankful for the good that still exist! Please welcome our newest member of the Oak + Valley fam, Miss Lilly! Lilly was born early this morning, with her amazing mamma bringing her into the world herself! She’s pretty dang precious and she and mom are doing great 😊

Meet Jayme Jenkins, the other half the Oak +Valley Doula. She’s a chip off the old block and one of the sweetest souls you will ever meet! Born in Halifax, NC her roots have kept her home near family, but she sure does love venturing out to the big city from time to time :)
Jayme is married to her high school sweetheart and together they have two boys and one baby girl due in June! Along with being a birth and postpartum doula, Jayme is also a birth photographer! We love being able to add that service along with our packages! Jaymes love for birthwork came when she was able to capture life at its earliest moments and she also suffered from postpartum depression with her second son and realized the value in educated, knowledgeable support and felt like she never wanted other mothers/families to go through what she went through, especially alone. Jayme loves doula work and calls it her passion, and y’all you can see that in every family that she serves! If you get a chance give her a warm hello! She can’t wait to meet you on your journey!

Meet our DOULAS: Jess Elliott Jess is originally from the mountains of Boone NC. There she attended college at Appalachian State and majored in Child Development and Psychology. She worked in social work for various non profits for about 10 years but practiced as a birth doula as much as she could in between her full time job and two kiddos! When she moved to Raleigh In 2020 she decided that her true passion was birth work, and that is where she belongs. So after earning her childbirth education credentials she became an educator at WakeMed where she teaches Labor and Birth Education, Infant Safety, Newborn basics, and breastfeeding. While she loves being an educator her heart is always with serving families, so after receiving her postpartum doula certification she knew that she wanted to be able to serve the families in her community with postpartum support. After meeting Jayme in her postpartum training the two hit it off and that is how Oak + Valley was born! Jess’s favorite part about postpartum care is getting to meet families where they are, and helping to support them however they need in their postpartum journey. Jess lives in Raleigh with her Partner Charlie and two boys, Cam and Max! Outside of Educator and Doula work Jess loves spending time with her family and friends and is always up for travel and adventure! You can also almost always catch her with a baby on her hip, whether she is working or not!

Hey hey! Its world Doula week! What is a doula you ask?! Let me tell ya:

Imagine you are at the foot of a tall mountain. And you've got to get to the top. It's going to be tough, but you've got to go up there. You've got to see the view.

If childbirth is a mountain, your doula is your friendly guide. She'll encourage you, pass you your water bottle, and remind you of that beautiful view. Most of all, she'll just be there. And that's what doulas do. We're just there. And just being there can make a big difference….
During Pregnancy we come to your home, get to know your family, you hopes for your pregnancy and birth and what you envision. We will give you some tips on positions and comfort measures that will come in handy day of, and we most importantly will meet you where you are along your journey and bring our expertise and experience along for the ride!
During birth, we remain that calm presence that is able to remind you how strong you are and to help your partner remind you as well! We follow your cues and we help guide you through each passage of labor. We massage your feet, help get you into different positions and give you the encouragement that you need to meet your baby! After birth we become your sidekick… postpartum doulas can help with everything from teaching you basic infant care to assisting with feeding and sleeping needs. We are highly trained infant caregivers and can help you become more in tune to your babies needs and cues! Need some light meal prep? We gotcha! Need a little help with the dishes? those bottles add up quick!-we got you! Need some support helping older siblings adjust or maybe we can spend some time with them so you can get that one on one with the new babe… can you guess… we gotcha!

Late night shenanigans! As a postpartum doula we offer overnight support so that as tired, overwhelmed parents, you can get a full night of sleep, all the while knowing your little one is receiving the best care! We “rest” when your baby rests, but we also load the dishwasher, fold laundry, and do some basic meal prep to help take some of those daunting tasks off your plate the next day. We do all of the changes and feedings throughout the night, unless of course you want to be involved in those and then we bring baby to you and then take baby back and help them settle and sleep once you are finished with the feed. We work on safe sleep practices and routines and more importantly support your rest so that you can be your best self for this new little human!
