I started my education with a Bachelors Degree in Biology from the State University of NY @ Geneseo, followed by my Physician Associate degree from Cornell University Medical College. Over the past 32 years I have worked in obesity medicine, multiple surgical specialties, conventional, integrative and energy medicine. I diagnosed and treated the worst of the worst complications of poorly controlled type 2 diabetes like vascular bypasses to salvage extremities from non healing ulcers, wound infections, amputations, strokes, dementia and heart attacks. I cared for many diabetes related, blind amputees, on dialysis and this has been forever imprinted on my heart. It wasn't until decades later that I realized this could have all been prevented if our patients had been taught how to live a healthy lifestyle and use food as medicine. This fueled my desire to become board certified in Lifestyle Medicine, then saw first hand, over and over again, how effective a healthy lifestyle program could reverse chronic diseases like type 2 diabetes, obesity, high blood pressure and so much more. Unfortunately, this is not taught in conventional medical schools, so I had to find a way to help people including my own family outside the medical model. So, I started a Healthy Lifestyles Ministry at my church to share my passion and mission to educate , equip, and empower men and women to achieve optimum health and wellness so they can live life to the fullest, feel amazing, energetic and free from preventable chronic diseases. Happy New Year!
The new 2026 Dietary Guidelines for Americans have officially been released—and they represent one of the most meaningful shifts in U.S. nutrition policy in decades.
Here’s a brief summary of what’s changed and why it matters for your metabolic health:
1. Protein is prioritized
The new guidelines recommend significantly more protein—about 1.2–1.6 g/kg of body weight per day—from whole, real foods like eggs, poultry, seafood, and red meat. This supports muscle mass, blood sugar control, and metabolic health.
2. Healthy fats are no longer the enemy
Full-fat dairy and traditional cooking fats like olive oil and butter are emphasized. Fats are no longer grouped with sugar, reflecting growing evidence that healthy fats support—not harm—metabolic and cardiovascular health.
3. Added sugar is strongly discouraged
The guidelines state that no amount of added sugar or artificial sweeteners is recommended. Children are advised to consume none at all, and adults are encouraged to keep intake extremely low.
4. Grains are de-emphasized
Grain recommendations have been reduced by up to 80%. Instead of being the foundation of the diet, grains are optional and best consumed in traditionally prepared forms like oats or sourdough.
What’s still missing....
While these guidelines are a major step forward, there’s still room for improvement—particularly clearer limits on alcohol, a formal definition of ultra-processed foods, and the removal of outdated limits on saturated fat.

Overall, this is a welcome shift toward whole, real, metabolically supportive nutrition—and a framework I already use with patients and clients.

As we come to the final day of 2025, I want to pause with you — not to judge the year that’s ending, but to reflect on it with honesty, gratitude, and grace.

This past year likely included moments of progress you’re proud of, along with seasons that felt heavy or discouraging. For many, busy schedules, chronic stress, fatigue, family responsibilities, and competing priorities became real barriers to staying aligned with health goals. If this year didn’t unfold the way you hoped, please know this: you are not alone, and you did not fail. Life happens, and God’s grace meets us right where we are.
