This Black History Month, we’re honoring inventors like Mary Beatrice Davidson Kenner who changed how we care for our feminine hygiene. ✨

Mary Kenner was born in Monroe, NC on May 17, 1912. She invented the adjustable sanitary belt, which preceded the modern adhesive maxi pad. Although there was interest in her invention, it was rejected once it was discovered that she was Black. Her patent became public domain once it expired which allowed the sanitary belt to be manufactured. She never received payment for her invention.

Mary later invented a modified version of the belt, including a moisture resistant pocket. She has a total of 5 patents for household and personal care: the largest number held by a black woman.

📋 True wellness starts with the habits nobody sees. Here is a Hygiene Health refresher which includes the big three:

🛁 Personal Hygiene: This is your first line of defense to prevent the spread of germs. It includes regular bathing, handwashing, keeping your hair & nails clean, covering coughs/sneezes, and managing menstrual care safely. It also includes 🦷 Oral Hygiene which is the gateway to your body. Brushing and flossing don’t just protect your smile—they reduce systemic inflammation that can affect your heart and overall health.

🛌 Sleep Hygiene: It’s not about how long you sleep, but how well you sleep. Keep your room cool, ditch the phone 30 minutes before bed, and stick to a routine to let your brain recharge. Be sure to change your bedding frequently.

🏠Domestic hygiene: This involves keeping the home clean, disinfected, and organized, while also practicing good food safety, managing waste properly, and maintaining regular laundry routines.

Which one of these do you find the hardest to stay consistent with? Let’s chat in the comments! 👇

What comes to mind when you hear the word Hygiene? 🧼

It’s more than just a daily shower. Hygiene Health is the proactive practice of maintaining cleanliness to preserve health and prevent the spread of illness. It is the very foundation of self-care. This week, we’re breaking down the different "branches" of hygiene to help you start February feeling refreshed and empowered.

Today, we’re giving a massive round of applause to Stephanie Robinson! She has been with us since day one (even before incorporating) and her journey with us has been instrumental to who we are today.

From our very first campus visit at St. Aug to our most recent milestone at Duke, her compassion, concern, and unwavering support have been our constant. Stephanie, you are a pillar of this organization. We are here because you believed in us before anyone else did. We’re glad that you’re not only our Founder’s sister, but you are a part of our village as well!

Join us in the comments by dropping a “👏” to thank her for her incredible heart!

Did you know that good hygiene is important for both physical and mental health?

💪Physical Health: Washing your hands, taking regular baths, and keeping up with oral care are key ways to protect yourself from spreading illnesses like colds, flu, and stomach bugs, as well as preventing skin infections and dental problems.

🧠Mental Well-being: Keeping clean helps boost confidence and self-respect. On the flip side, poor hygiene—often from lack of access—can lead to feeling isolated, anxious, and struggling to keep a job or attend school, creating a cycle of poverty and poor health.

Our Story

SOYMILK & HOPE was founded in 2016 by Portia Ashe Hargrove. Born in Trenton, NJ, Portia transitioned to NC with her family in 1987, attending Saint Augustine’s College (now Saint Augustine’s University). She grew up in a community where “village mothers” helped to nurture (feed, clothe, and discipline) the children in the neighborhood; her mother, Gwendolyn, and grandmother, Mattie, included.

A mother of 3, Portia longs to see the day again where the village can come together to help nurture, encourage, support, and inspire today’s mothers and college students. She relied on her village to assist in training up her children, and desires to create a village of community nurturers . Over the years, she has provided shelter to several young mothers; cooked Sunday dinner for college students; sent care packages to college students; purchased school clothes & supplies for other children; as well as purchased household items and pampers & wipes for mothers in need. She understands the joys and stress of being both a young mother and college student. As a result, SOYMILK & HOPE was birthed!

The organization’s name is an acronym for Supporting Our Young Mothers Involving Leaders with Knowledge & Helping Others Prepare for Education. Simply put, It’s who we are!
