Children are now the fastest-growing group of trafficking victims, not in far-away places, but right here in our communities.

Reports from federal agencies and child-protection organizations show the same trend: traffickers are going after younger kids because they believe younger victims are easier to groom, manipulate, and hide in plain sight.

At Magdalena’s Daughters, this is exactly why we invest in prevention.
RAISE: The Antidote to Human Trafficking equips youth with the knowledge, language, and confidence to recognize grooming long before it escalates.
Education is protection.

And when you support RAISE, you’re helping protect children before traffickers ever get the chance.

In 2024, 18% of the children who left the care of social services and were reported missing to NCMEC were likely victims of child s*x trafficking.

This statistic highlights how vulnerable children in the foster care system are to exploitation and why strong safety nets, prevention education, and supportive housing are essential to protecting them.

A Phoebe Putney Memorial Hospital doctor was among 12 people arrested in a s*x trafficking operation in south Georgia.
Malcolm Tyrone Jefferson, 40, was arrested along with 11 others in a GBI operation called Operation Radiant Shadows. He is a surgeon at the hospital.

The Georgia Bureau of Investigation said that the operation – called “Operation Raydiant Shadows” – targeted people who traveled from areas near Dougherty County with the intent to purchase s*x or sell s*x commercially.

Officials said the goal of the operation was to draw in commercial s*x buyers and s*x workers and to identify and arrest human traffickers. The individuals arrested range from age 17 to 58.

Ten of the 12 people arrested are from South Georgia.
Jefferson faces one count of pandering.

Phoebe Putney responded to a request for comment, saying, “This is a personal matter unrelated to his employment. Therefore, no comment to offer at this time.”

A recent Orange County Human Trafficking Task Force report revealed a devastating truth: children are now the fastest-growing group of human trafficking victims in Orange County.

The youngest was only six years old. The average age? Just 14.
Traffickers are preying on vulnerability, exploiting loneliness, economic hardship, and unsupervised internet access.

No child should ever be a commodity.
It’s time for communities to rise together to protect, educate, and empower our youth.

Long Beach police rescued a 15-year-old girl from a suspected human trafficking situation at a North Long Beach motel last month, and detectives are now searching for the men believed to have s*xually abused her.

On the morning of Aug. 20, officers responded to a report of possible trafficking at a motel on the 5300 block of Atlantic Avenue, and quickly located the teenage girl.

According to the Long Beach Police Department, the girl had run away from a group home before coming into contact with several adult men who are believed to have s*xually assaulted her.

Authorities did not disclose how long she had been missing or how the suspects allegedly lured or trafficked her. Officers removed the girl from the scene and have since connected her with support services, officials said.

“The trafficking of a child can have devastating and often enduring traumatic effects,” Long Beach Police Chief Wally Hebeish said in a statement. “I am extremely grateful to the officers who rescued this young girl and commend the detectives who are diligently working to identify, locate, and arrest any individuals involved in the trafficking of this child.”

Hebeish said the department remains committed to eradicating human trafficking from the community.

One of the biggest misconceptions about human trafficking is that it always involves crossing borders or being moved from place to place. But that’s not true.

Trafficking isn’t about transportation, it’s about exploitation.
A person can be trafficked without ever leaving their city, neighborhood, or even their home.

What defines trafficking is force, fraud, or coercion, not distance traveled. Many survivors are groomed, manipulated, and exploited by people they already know and trust.

When we only picture trafficking as something that happens “somewhere else,” we miss the signs happening right in front of us.

It’s not about movement, it’s about control.

Social media has changed the landscape of human trafficking. What once happened on dark street corners now happens in DMs, comments, and online games.

Traffickers no longer need to hunt, they scroll. They study posts, learn who feels unseen, who’s struggling, who needs validation. Then they offer what’s missing: friendship, love, opportunity, or understanding. It feels safe, until it isn’t.

Platforms like Instagram, Snapchat, and Facebook have become recruitment tools because they mirror what traffickers exploit most: trust.
A compliment turns into a private chat. A chat becomes a secret. And before long, the “friendship” becomes control.

Parents, mentors, caregivers — this is your cue.

Don’t just monitor what youth post. Talk about why they post. Help them understand that not every “like” is safe, and not every “friend” is real.
Because today, the new street corner fits in a pocket, and awareness is their best defense

Charges were filed against a former teacher and her boyfriend, who are accused of grooming a Nebraska student.

According to court records, 36-year-old Elizabeth Jamie Love was charged with s*x trafficking of a minor and third-degree s*xual abuse by a school employee. Her boyfriend, 42-year-old Jarid “Jack” Krause, was charged with s*x trafficking of a minor.

Love’s bond was set at 10% of $250,000. Krause’s bond was also set at 10% of $250,000. Love’s next court hearing is scheduled for Nov. 17. Krause’s next hearing is set for Nov. 3.

The investigation began after police said a current high school student that Love was instructing through her employment as a transition coordinator and teacher in ESU-11 reported inappropriate interactions with the couple.
These interactions, which began on Oct. 9, included s*xual questions to the teen victim, an arrest affidavit shows.

On Oct. 11, Love and Krause invited the victim and two young boys to their house for a movie and pizza. During the event, Krause and Love attempted to lure the victim into another room before Krause tried to have s*x with her, court records show.

The victim, uncomfortable with the situation, left the house and tried to call her father. Court records stated that Love then picked up the teen, apologized for the incident and gave her $100 to remain silent.

Court records stated that texts between Love and Krause showed that the two had planned to groom the victim in advance, with the earliest discussion involving the victim happening on April 8.

Human trafficking is not confined to dark alleys or distant places, it’s happening right where we live, learn, and connect. It weaves its way into our neighborhoods, our schools, and even our social media timelines, hiding behind ordinary interactions.

The truth is, traffickers thrive where awareness is low and vulnerability is high. They exploit trust, love, and opportunity. But by understanding that trafficking can exist within our own communities, we begin to strip away its power.

Education and vigilance are our greatest tools. When we choose to see what’s really happening, we make it harder for traffickers to hide. Awareness isn’t fear, it’s protection.

That’s why we created RAISE - Antidote to Human Trafficking , a survivor-led prevention curriculum that equips youth with the knowledge and skills to stay safe, build healthy relationships, and recognize manipulation before it escalates.

Many trafficking victims don’t see themselves as victims early enough, not because they choose not to, but because trafficking often doesn’t look like what we expect.

It might start as someone who seems caring. Someone who offers a place to stay, a gift, a ride, or a promise of love. Over time, that “care” becomes control, emotional, financial, and physical. What started as affection turns into isolation, fear, and dependence.

This is how grooming works. It’s quiet, strategic, and built on manipulation. By the time a person realizes what’s happening, they may already feel trapped, not by chains, but by loyalty, shame, or fear of losing the only “support” they know.

The first step in prevention is helping youth recognize these red flags early. Talk about what real respect, consent, and safety look like. Make conversations about trust and boundaries normal, not taboo.
Because the sooner they can name it, the sooner they can escape it.

That’s why we created RAISE - Antidote to Human Trafficking, a survivor-led prevention curriculum that equips youth with the knowledge and skills to stay safe, build healthy relationships, and recognize manipulation before it escalates.
