"Why haven't I heard about you before?!"

Most people who find us are wondering some version of this.
* Why doesn't their doctor know what the myofascial system does and how it affects health?

* Why are they being prescribed medications that don't address underlying causes?

* Why hasn't their surgeon mentioned the impact of surgery on the myofascial system?

* Why hasn't their orthopedist told them bones and joints can't work well if there is trouble in the myofascial system?

We get these questions A LOT. And we cannot speak for the medical profession.

For those who have started to take matters into their own hands, research is overwhelming in regards to the importance of myofascial therapy to health and healing.

If you are wondering if there is more you could be doing to prevent breakdown in your body, chances are the answer is a resounding yes!

When you are ready, let's talk.

As the massage therapy profession evolves, so does our understanding of key body systems, like fascia.

The “Fix it” fallacy! 😱

As therapists, we sometimes fall into the “fix” vs. “facilitate” rabbit hole. Clients often arrive wanting us to fix them vs. facilitating their body’s own ability to self correct.

How many times have we thought; “If I just address this one area before the session ends (tick tock, tick tock), it will take care of the issue.” Of course, the body being the body, we end up following the fascia as it leads us deeper into the “issues in our tissues!”

It’s important to remember that WE ARE treating the entirety of the body whenever we touch any aspect of the fascial system!

Our clients, often think the same thing; “If you could work on my (fill in the body part!) before the session ends....” Of course, the body being the body, there’s no such thing as working on one body part when we are invariably connected to the entire body via our fascial web! Given it’s druthers, our body would lead us throughout the entirety of its facial system for as long as we are willing to treat!

Having a stopping point is necessary in order for the client to experience the felt sense of subtle differences or sometimes huge shifts in improvement, along with those continued areas of significance, and to self treat those areas between sessions. Most importantly, our body also needs time to integrate the work, just as we need time after a meal to digest and utilize the food.

We are not healers nor mechanics. We are facilitators who use our senses and intuition to help our clients become aware of their “fascial voice,” their own inner physician, who guides the healing process.

Great explanation of the difference between Massage and Myofascial Release. Thank you Release Works-Myofascial Release of Salt Lake!

FAQ: Why do massage and myofascial release get different results?

What makes the difference in results between massage therapy and myofascial release therapy? Quite simply, it is because massage is primarily about soothing sore and tight muscles whereas myofascial release targets the troubles in your tissues that lead to sore and tight muscles.

It’s like changing your focus from the unevenly worn tires on your car, to the misalignment that keeps causing the uneven wearing. And that just makes more sense, doesn’t it?

How does it work? That’s hard to explain when you haven’t felt anything like it before… It’s sometimes like stretching, it’s sometimes like melting thickened tissues. Myofascial release is hands-on, manual therapy, using sustained pressure or traction from the therapist’s hands into hardened and thickened tissues and scar tissues in your body. We call these restrictions.

The salient point is that restricted tissues cause problems (like distortions in movement and alignment of your body) that lead to compensations, sorenesses, and areas being “beat up” and breaking down.

Restrictions frequently do not hurt in and of themselves, but they lead to problems and pain elsewhere in your body. It’s important to realize, rubbing and the typical stretching you do will not release these restrictions, it’s just too hard and too fast. Also, restricted tissue doesn’t show up on any of the typical scans your doctor will perform.

When considering which best fits your needs, it is important to note that massage is primarily focused on relaxation, soothing, and easing tired and sore muscles while myofascial release focuses on restrictions within the connective tissue system of the body (which are often the cause of tired and sore muscles).

Which is best for you? That depends on what you need most right now. Relaxation? That's not so much us. A good massage can do wonders. Long term resolution and improved myofascial health? Yep, that's us. If that's you, let's talk 🙂

"Get used to different" is one of the taglines from the "The Chosen", a series about the life of Jesus and the disciples He chose to follow Him.

I purchased my new office welcome mat from "The Chosen" gift store because I think "Get used to different" is also a perfect message for my clients.

Myofascial Release is not massage and it is not traditional Physical Therapy. When a new client walks into my office for their initial appointment, I can hardly wait to provide them with the MFR experience.

The John Barnes Myofascial Release Approach consists of a triad of interventions which combine to provide authentic healing.

The therapist's hands address structural changes in the body by delivering sustained pressure into the connective tissue that comprises the fascial system. As a result, crushing pressures are released from pain sensitive structures and the cause of the pain Is eliminated.

When fascial restrictions are present, the fluid substrate in which the fascia lies becomes solidified, thus restricting movement and mobillity. Rebounding techniques, which rock or oscillate the body at varying amplitudes and speeds, restore the flow of fluid and rehydrate the fascial system.

Unwinding describes the body's innate wisdom to move into positions of space that soften long-held bracing or holding patterns which have resulted from past physical or emotional trauma. The client may also experience emotional releases associated with the trauma which creates a melding of mind, body, and spirit.

When you are met at my door with the message "Get used to different", I can assure you that you will receive a treatment experience that is as unique as you. To borrow another tagline from "The Chosen", "Come and See".

One of my clients sent me this photo after she returned home from one of her Myofascial Release sessions.

Chronic pain is exhausting.
So is muscle and joint stiffness that restricts simple movements and adds extra minutes to the completion of basic tasks.
Many of my clients also experience irritability, anxiety, and poor sleep to further add to the list of symptoms that build to a breaking point.

Myofascial Release removes crushing pressures from pain sensitive structures, increases range of motion and flexibility, and improves posture, circulation, and overall function.

As areas of tension and fascial restrictions are released throughout the body, clients often report that they feel more calm and relaxed. Many times, as my clients are walking out the door, they comment that they want to go home and take a nap.
I take that as a compliment!

How do you spell relief?
