Tomorrow we spring forward one hour for Daylight Saving Time. While it may feel like a small change, losing an hour can sometimes be challenging for seniors — especially those living with dementia.

Changes in time can disrupt sleep, routines, and increase confusion.

A few ways caregivers can help ease the transition:

Hearing a loved one with dementia say they want to go home can be emotional and confusing — but often, “home” isn’t a place… it’s a feeling. It may represent comfort, security, or memories from a time when they felt safe.

Instead of correcting or reasoning, try:
✔️ Listening and acknowledging their feelings
✔️ Reassuring them they are safe and cared for
✔️ Asking gentle questions about what “home” means to them
✔️ Redirecting with music, photos, food, or a calming activity

Sometimes this request can be linked to anxiety, discomfort, or even “sundowning,” so paying attention to patterns and basic needs — hunger, temperature, fatigue — can help ease distress.
