I yelled at my kid last week.

Not a firm-voice-setting-a-boundary yell. A real one. The kind where you hear your own mother come out of your mouth and then stand in the kitchen afterward wondering what just happened.

I know what happened. My sensory system was already maxed. My executive function had been running on fumes since 6am. And then someone asked me for a snack in a whiny voice for the fourth time in an hour and my nervous system just... decided for me.

Here’s the thing nobody tells you about being a neurodivergent parent: you’re not failing at patience. Your brain is processing the entire house — every sound, every texture, every demand — all at once, all the time. And sometimes there’s just no bandwidth left.

That’s why I built this group. Parenting While ND starts February 18. It’s for the parent who loves their kid fiercely and also sometimes locks themselves in the bathroom for 90 seconds of silence. Both things are true.

Virtual. 8 weeks. Small group. Link in bio.

Special or preferred interests aren’t just quirky (or at times annoying), they are mental health treatment for neurodivergent adults. ADHD and Autistic folks especially. Research show that neurodivergent adults can improve their mental health and quality of life by focusing on their unique passions. For adults with autism, special interests provide a sense of joy, purpose, and control acting as a protective sanctuary against anxiety. Research also indicates that adults with ADHD have better well-being and reduce stress when they recognize and apply their traits like creativity, hyper focus, and spontaneity. The balance isn’t in hiding or avoiding our interests, it’s in engaging with them in a way that doesn’t completely burn us out! Ask me how i figure that out! 🫠🫠🫠

When you’re neurodivergent AND a parent, regulation is not optional. In fact, this may be a hot take but prioritizing your regulation before your kids is SO necessary. Protect your space as diligently as you can, because no one else will 😬
