TIPS TO READ AND UNDERSTAND SCRIPTURE
Building confidence in God’s Word—one step at a time.
Reading the Bible can feel overwhelming at first, but it doesn’t have to be. With the right approach, Scripture becomes clear, personal, and powerful. Here are some simple, practical tips to help you read and understand God’s Word more deeply:
✅ 1. Start with Prayer
Ask God to give you wisdom and understanding before you read.
“Open my eyes, that I may behold wondrous things out of Your law.” – Psalm 119:18
✅ 2. Choose the Right Bible Translation
Some translations are easier to read while others are more literal. Choose one that helps you understand clearly.
Word-for-Word (more accurate): ESV, NASB, KJV
Thought-for-Thought (easier to read): NIV, NLT, CSB
Paraphrase (big picture meaning): The Message, TLB
👉 If you’re a beginner, start with CSB or NLT for clarity, then compare with ESV for deeper study.
✅ 3. Read in Context
Don’t read just one verse—read the whole chapter or at least the verses before and after. Ask: Who wrote this? Who were they writing to? Why was it written?
✅ 4. Take Your Time
You don’t have to rush or read big chunks. Focus on understanding, not speed. Even a few verses can be powerful.
✅ 5. Use a Study Method
Pick one that works for you:
• SOAP: Scripture, Observation, Application, Prayer
• Inductive: Observe, Interpret, Apply
• Verse Mapping: Break down keywords and cross-references
✅ 6. Let Scripture Interpret Scripture
If something is unclear, look for other verses on the same topic. The Bible explains itself when you connect passages.
✅ 7. Use Study Tools
Helpful resources:
• Cross references in your Bible
• Concordance (helps find verses by keywords)
• Commentary (scholars explain verses)
• Apps: YouVersion, Blue Letter Bible, Bible Hub
✅ 8. Take Notes
Write down what God shows you. Highlight key verses or journal your reflections.
✅ 9. Apply What You Read
Ask: How can I live this out today? The Bible isn’t just knowledge—it’s transformation.
“Do not merely listen to the word… Do what it says.” – James 1:22
✅ 10. Be Consistent
Understanding comes over time. The more time you spend in God’s Word, the clearer it becomes.
Studying Scripture isn’t about perfection—it’s about connection. Keep showing up, keep seeking, and God will give you understanding. 💛
