Excellent image and presentation of Shaggy manes' characteristics..rapidly deliquescing—or self-digesting—into a black, inky, spore-filled liquid within hours of maturity. Shaggy manes are choice edibles, but they must be cooked or processed quickly (ideally within 1–2 hours of harvest) before they dissolve. The resulting black liquid is safe to use as a culinary ingredient, such as in pasta dough or sauces.
