Community & Food Security event @ All Good Acres farm past Sunday.
The owner of the farm, Kevin Glathar, showed us around. The farm hosts different animals that complement pasture management, animal welfare and healthy ecosystem him and his family have created where livestock graze on diverse forage.
Great talk from VICFA (Virginia Independent Consumers and Farmers Association) president Suzi and the most famous farmer Joel Salatin.
As a consumer I didn’t know what regular farmers (that are trying to grow nourishing healthy food aka non-GMO, grass-fed, pasture-raised) have to go through to sell the food legally. While big corporations focus on volume and low cost (aka low quality ingredients), the little guy just trying to share quality nutrient-dense food with those who interested.
VICFA is a Virginia organization that promotes food freedom so people have more choices and Virginia farmers have more opportunities:
“Burdensome government regulations that favor large corporate food industries, often prohibit the legal sale of many food products that could make the local food-scape more interesting and create more nutrient dense choices.
Direct unregulated sales between neighbors would increase the amount of nutritionally dense foods available for sale, enable small businesses to start up, and benefit your local community.
Unfortunately, the industrial agriculture lobbyists and the Virginia Farm Bureau do not agree with our position and do everything possible to thwart any bills in the Virginia General Assembly that would increase unregulated neighbor to neighbor trade in local food in Virginia.
We all deserve to have the freedom to choose and have access to good food for ourselves and our families. Changing the current industrial food status quo that limits those choices and protecting those freedoms won takes action, we invite you to take part.”
