November Evening

And then there’s
the yellow trees dripping
with after-storm light.
And then the busy
people’s faces, each
with its effortless beauty.
And then the steely, spacious
twilight glow in the west,
and to the east the tall poplar
shining dimly against
dark gray distant clouds.
And then I’m walking in
a world once again enchanted,
once again seducing me
back into wonder. And then,
just for a moment,
I remember who I am.

The Way It Is

There’s a thread you follow. It goes among
things that change. But it doesn’t change.
People wonder about what you are pursuing.
You have to explain about the thread.
But it is hard for others to see.
While you hold it you can’t get lost.
Tragedies happen; people get hurt
or die; and you suffer and get old.
Nothing you do can stop time’s unfolding.
You don’t ever let go of the thread.

Bioluminescence

Sometimes, when I fear
the small light I bring
isn’t big enough or bright
enough, I think of that night
on the beach years ago
when every step I took
in the cool wet sand turned
a glowing, iridescent blue—
and the waves themselves
were a flashing greenish hue—
imagine we could do
what 7.9 billion
one-celled can plankton do—
can shine when it’s dark,
can shine when agitated,
can shine with our own
inner light and trust when we all
bring the tiny light we have,
it’s enough to illumine
the long stretch of night.

In Blackwater Woods

Look, the trees
are turning
their own bodies
into pillars

of light,
are giving off the rich
fragrance of cinnamon
and fulfillment,

the long tapers
of cattails
are bursting and floating away over
the blue shoulders

of the ponds,
and every pond,
no matter what its
name is, is

nameless now.
Every year
everything
I have ever learned

in my lifetime
leads back to this: the fires
and the black river of loss
whose other side

is salvation,
whose meaning
none of us will ever know.
To live in this world

you must be able
to do three things:
to love what is mortal;
to hold it

against your bones knowing
your own life depends on it;
and, when the time comes to let it go,
to let it go.

In Any Event

If we are fractured
we are fractured
like stars
bred to shine
in every direction,
through any dimension,
billions of years
since and hence.

I shall not lament
the human, not yet.
There is something
more to come, our hearts
a gold mine
not yet plumbed,
an uncharted sea.

Nothing is gone forever.
If we came from dust
and will return to dust
then we can find our way
into anything.

What we are capable of
is not yet known,
and I praise us now,
in advance.

The Tug of Autumn

At noon I stood in stillness,
amidst a cathedral of browning oaks,
chin up, mouth agape, watching
leaves languish from the trees.
It was raining and the tug of autumn
was surely here.

I would like to be wiser, calmer,
more at home in the world.
I'd like to give my days
to the delighted artfulness
of courtship, merging, lingering,
bearing witness, offering praise.
I want to hold what holds us.

Our 2025 Fall Retreat may be in the rear view, but we’ll never forget the natural beauty of Lake Logan, the discovery of new friends and the comfort of old friends, the delight of delicious food, and most of all, the welcoming of the body back to itself in practice. Hope to see you at this bi-annual retreat in 2027!

This being human is a guest house.
Every morning a new arrival.

A joy, a depression, a meanness,
some momentary awareness comes
as an unexpected visitor.

Welcome and entertain them all!
Even if they’re a crowd of sorrows,
who violently sweep your house
empty of its furniture,
still, treat each guest honorably.
He may be clearing you out
for some new delight.

The dark thought, the shame, the malice,
meet them at the door laughing,
and invite them in.

Be grateful for whoever comes,
because each has been sent
as a guide from beyond.
