Parkinson’s disease (PD) affects more than movement. It can also impact digestion, nutrition, and daily comfort in ways many people don’t realize.

Join us for a free viewing party for “The Gut-Brain Connection PD Symposium” from 8–11:30 a.m. on Wednesday, April 29 in Lingle Grand Hall, Reid Health, 1100 Reid Parkway in Richmond.

Doors open at 8 a.m. with the online program beginning promptly at 8:30 a.m. Complimentary refreshments will be provided.

People living with PD often experience gastrointestinal (GI) symptoms that can affect daily function, medication effectiveness, nutrition, swallowing safety, and overall quality of life. Emerging research also highlights the gut as a potential factor in brain-related diseases such as PD.

This online symposium offers an accessible, interdisciplinary overview of:
• The gut–brain connection
• The role of the microbiome
• Practical food for health strategies
• A moderated Q&A addressing common challenges

This event is sponsored by the Parkinson's Foundation, Reid Fitness, Rock Steady Boxing, Reid Health Neurology, and Rush University Medical Center.

The symposium is open to individuals living with Parkinson's, their family, friends, and the community.

Attendance is free, but registration is required to help us plan appropriately. To RSVP, contact Victoria Raney at Victoria.Raney@reidhealth.org.

Space is limited. RVSP by Friday, April 24 to attend.

Early detection saves lives. Oral cancer caught early has a 5-year survival rate of
80–90%, but when diagnosed later, after spreading to nearby tissues or lymph
nodes, survival drops to 20–50%. Around 70% of oral cancers are diagnosed late, often because symptoms go unnoticed.

Watch for warning signs like:
• Lump or swelling in the neck
• Voice changes or hoarseness lasting more than two weeks
• Mouth sores or patches that don’t heal
• Difficulty swallowing, chewing, or moving your tongue
• Persistent sore throat or ear pain

Routine screenings give you clarity and confidence in your health. Everyone deserves clear answers with less stress because you matter.

From their first year in practice, graduates of our Nurse Residency Program developed “No Pressure, Just Prevention,” a project now used hospital-wide that showcases innovative wound care prevention strategies aimed at improving patient outcomes and elevating frontline nursing practice.

Baylee Petry, Lindsay Glover, and Kenzi Chenoweth were invited to present their work at the 2026 Vizient Nursing Programs Conference.

The team shared how they created a practical, cost-effective solution to improve patient outcomes.

A second conference presentation featured Erika Millsaps, Manager of Clinical Education, who highlighted the role of academic partnerships in supporting new nurses. Together, these presentations reflect our commitment to developing confident, practice-ready nurses while advancing patient care.

“How many times a year do you get to drop a helicopter on your football field?!”

Amanda Brinker, an RN with Reid Health’s float pool, asked that question as more than 200 Northeastern Wayne Schools students got their answer on April 15 when a care flight helicopter landed right on their field.

For Cassandra (Casey) Addington, a Reid Health Emergency Services nurse practitioner and flight nurse, the day was about more than the helicopter. It was an opportunity for students to imagine themselves in her role, delivering lifesaving care to critically ill or injured patients.

The event, part of a Healthcare Club program organized by Northeastern, Reid Health, and IU East in collaboration with Lutheran Air, gave students a chance to see the helicopter up close, meet the flight team, ask questions. They also talked with Reid Health Emergency Medical Services and the New Garden Township Fire Department while exploring an ambulance and fire truck.

As the featured speaker, Casey shared what it takes to work as a flight nurse, from ongoing training and obstacles to its high-stress demands. She shared there’s another side of care flight, too.

“I love being able to save lives with the skills and training I have,” she said.

Casey said her heart was full seeing the students’ excitement and inspiring them to explore healthcare careers and teamwork. She hopes students left inspired.

She remembered being a high school student with the same dream, even when it didn’t feel realistic.

“If that’s your dream, never give up. Take every obstacle or challenge and find a way through it.”

Our Reid Health Connersville Rehabilitation Services team is on the move today. They’re staying in the same building – at 1941 Virginia Ave. – but they’re switching spaces.

Starting Monday afternoon (April 20), they’ll be seeing patients in the old Cardiology suite and atrium on the first floor. If you have an appointment, you’ll need to use the building’s east entrance on Virginia Avenue and check in at the old Cardiology waiting room. Please don’t go directly into the atrium area.

If you need to borrow a wheelchair to make it to the new location, give them a call at (765) 827-7964 so they can help you.

We’re excited to serve you in the new space!

It’s easy to dismiss a blister, cut, or scrape on your foot as nothing to worry about.

But healing can take longer on your feet, especially with conditions like diabetes, so it’s important to keep a close eye on any wounds you might have there.

Dr. Alisha Jones, one of our experienced providers at Reid Health Podiatry, has details on the warning signs that an infection might be setting in in her new blog post: https://reidhealth.org/Healthy-Communities/Reid-Health-Tips-News-and-Stories/Blog/Search/Foot-and-ankle-wound-care.

If you have a wound that’s taking a bit too long to heal or another issue you’d like to have checked out, give Reid Health Podiatry a call at (765) 962-4444. We can usually get you an appointment within the same week, if not the same day.

And coming soon, getting quick care for a foot injury will be even easier! Starting April 7, Dr. Travis McKellar will begin seeing patients at Reid Health Orthopedics Greenville for Turnaround Tuesdays. Walk in at the Greenville office on Tuesdays with no appointment needed.
