Boot Camp recently kicked off our Nurse Residency Program with a two-day orientation powered by our Nursing Excellence Resilience & Development (NERD) team. Through hands-on simulations, disaster preparedness training, wellness sessions, and team-building activities, nurse residents start building the confidence they’ll carry into their careers.

The shared experiences — and the support from our clinical educators — helps create a strong sense of connection from the start. Also, they’ll meet for their first seminar this month.

“One of my favorite elements of the program is Boot Camp,” said Erika Millsaps, Manager of Clinical Education for NERD.

“It’s where we begin building relationships and set the tone for the next 12 months.”

Follow along as we share their journey — and see how new nurses learn, lead, thrive, and leave their mark. 💙

If you’re 45 or older, now is the time to talk with your primary care provider about a referral for a colonoscopy.

Across our region, it’s one of the five most common cancers we treat. Yet nearly 1 in 3 U.S. adults aren't getting screened as recommended, according to the American Society for Gastrointestinal Endoscopy (ASGE).

The good news is colorectal cancer is often preventable with routine screening. Colonoscopies can detect polyps early — before they can turn into cancer — giving a head start on prevention and peace of mind.

You deserve answers today to protect your future health because you matter. 💙

Learn more about colorectal cancer screening at https://reidhealth.org/Healthy-Communities/Preventive-Screenings-and-Wellness-Programs.

Colorectal cancer is one of the most common cancers among adults, but it can be prevented with routine screening. On-time screening tests can find polyps before they turn into cancer. Talk to your doctor if you have questions about screening!

Here are some of the numbers in Indiana:
- Colorectal cancer is the third most common cancer among both males and females in Indiana
- Colorectal cancer is the second leading cause of all deaths among males in Indiana
- The lifetime risk of developing colorectal cancer is 1 in 26 for females and 1 in 24 for males

🌼 A Connersville resident is crediting an Emergency Services nurse with not only saving her life but also later providing compassionate care to her husband during a separate visit.

For her extraordinary care, Bailey Herrell, RN, of our Connersville Emergency Services team is the DAISY Award recipient for February.

The nominator shared Bailey quickly recognized she was going into hypovolemic shock and acted immediately.

“Bailey is amazing,” the nominator wrote.

She credits Bailey with saving her life last summer. Since then, Bailey has also cared for the nominator’s husband, taking time to ask thoughtful questions, double-check concerning blood pressure readings, and ensure his pain was addressed with care and dignity.

“She’s efficient, responsive, and compassionate,” the nominator wrote.

If you spend any time talking to nurses, you’ll often hear inspirational stories about the events or people in their lives that called them into the profession.

But that wasn’t the case for Amy Selby.

Our Ambassador for the month of March made the decision to pursue a nursing career after being told during vocational school she was good with patients.

“It was the best decision of my life,” she said. “Often throughout my life my mom has said, 'I don't know how you do it.’ I’ll be honest, sometimes I wonder how I do it. It hasn't always been easy.

“Nursing is hard on your body – the time on your feet, the lifting and pulling on patients, and the 12-hour shifts. Sometimes being a nurse breaks your heart. You see things you can't unsee or unfeel, but there are pivotal moments when you offer love, comfort, or peace to a patient or their family and it’s in these moments you find profound joy.

“You hold on to those moments, they're what keeps you coming back shift after shift.”

As we get closer to the opening of our new Connersville campus on Park Road, you’re going to start seeing more activity there.

Today, our EMS team is moving to the new building, which is better set up as a base for our operations, including making sure our ambulances are well maintained and ready at a moment’s notice.

What’s not changing is what happens when you call 911. In an emergency, Fayette County EMS will still be the responding agency and patients will still be transported to the Emergency Department at our Virginia Avenue building until the Park Road campus is ready to open.

Keep an eye on https://reidhealth.org/buildup for the latest updates. There’s so much more to come in the next few weeks!

Reid Health Foundation’s fourth annual Kaleidoscope ball brings the community together for a night of entertainment and purpose to support cancer care and prevention.

“Kaleidoscope – Let’s Have a Ball” will take place on Saturday, March 21 at the First Bank Richmond Expo Hall on the Wayne County Fairgrounds in Richmond.

A Ginger Gray production, the event is made possible through the support of our community partners.

Over the past few years, we’ve been among the pioneers across the country for new technologies aimed at improving care and the overall patient experience.

And recently, the American Hospital Association took notice of all that hard work, naming us one of four finalists for its 2026 Rural Hospital Excellence in Innovation Award.

“I’m proud of the innovative spirit and patient-focused care of our team,” said Ben Wells, Reid Health President/CEO. “Our people are what sets us apart from other health systems.

“It’s always flattering to be recognized for national awards but understanding how these innovations impact our patients’ lives is the true prize.”

We have a new Chief Financial Officer, and he’s a longtime Richmond resident.

Originally from Boston, Massachusetts, Greg Turner came to Indiana in 1987 and moved to Richmond five years later.

He joined Reid in 2013, serving as Reimbursement Analyst and then Manager of Budget and Reimbursement before moving into his current role as Director of Financial Services.

"I'm excited Greg has chosen to accept this new role with the organization,” said Ben Wells, Reid Health President/CEO. “He has a great deal of experience in healthcare finance and accounting, which will certainly benefit us as we move forward.

Ivy Tech Richmond nursing student Isaac Messer of Connersville is already making his mark on patients and their families during his first week of clinical rotation with us.

A patient nominated Isaac for Going the Extra Mile (GEM) after contacting the unit to ensure he was recognized, sharing he embodied the qualities of a true caregiver. Our Nursing Excellence, Resilience & Development (NERD) team presented Isaac with the GEM. Isaac was inspired to pursue nursing through his job as a Nursing Care Assistant at our Emergency Department in Connersville.

For Isaac, the GEM reflects growth, especially in strengthening his communication skills as an introvert. While he’s gained skills in the technical side of nursing in the ED, he said his biggest challenge has been slowing down, explaining procedures, and helping patients feel comfortable during what can be a frightening experience.

During clinicals, he’s appreciated the opportunity to build connections with patients and families and seeing how collaboration across care teams supports the patient experience.

“It’s nice to connect with the family and help them along with the patient,” Isaac said.

He credits our patient-centered culture with creating meaningful moments of connection.

“You want to make sure you’re doing everything you can to make their hospital stay the best it can be,” Isaac said.

Congratulations, Isaac, and thank you for going the extra mile for our patients and families. 💙
