reflecting back on 2021, it's not about how big a project we got to do, but rather those we got to do them for. this bottle opener was probably one of the "smallest" pieces we did this year, but it had the largest impact on us as we were reminded of the precious gift of life we are each given. a dear of friend of ours lost his father unexpectedly this year and we wanted to create something that would help him and his family remember their loved one in the days, weeks, and years to come. we were reminded that death does not discriminate and does not yield to our timeline. our prayer heading into the new year is that we all come to know what it means to live life fully and abundantly in the One who gives us our daily breath. as we ring in the new year, let's raise a glass to those who have gone before us 🍻

had to post for small business Saturday before the day was over. we are thankful for so much this year including being given the opportunity to be parents. taking care of a newborn is tough and also why we had to take a small break from social media.

reflecting back on this table because our clients were also new parents. they wanted something modern but safe for their child. we used resin to create a glass effect and finished the cedar using the traditional Japanese method (shou sugi ban). the base was inspired by barrel coopers who create wine and whisky casks. we loved how the table came out and loved the glass effect the resin created.

first time getting to make a pyung sang for a client. our client wanted a little reminder of life back home. the pyung sang is a Korean style table / day bed. it's meant to be multi functional and a place where the family can gather to eat, sit, or lay. love the diversity of uses for one piece and helping create a space for loved ones to be with one another.

first time trying the shou sugi ban technique. this is a Japanese technique that preserves wood by charring it with fire. we used cedar since this is the wood traditionally used in Japan. we are thrilled a client trusted us to try this new technique on their piece.

flash back friday to the time I built my first house. a dog house that is 😉 the materials itself were nothing fancy - just some good old treated plywood and 2x4s. but the story behind the build is what made this project so special. our client had a great dane nearing the end of his lifespan and wanted to give his dog his own special space. as pet owners ourselves, we could empathize immensely with wanting to give your fur baby the best you could while you had the opportunity to do so.

I'm always proud of myself when I finish a project that I've put my heart into but this time it's going to be me that is a work in progress. Becoming a father is one of the greatest moments in my life and I can't wait to teach you everything I know and try my best to be the best dad I can be. Can't wait to have a little helper with me in the shop!

there's always something so special about being able to build in a completely empty space. our client had a large wall space that they wanted to make functional. this was the largest project we've taken on thus far and it was such a fun experience. the built in ended up 11 feet tall and 15 feet wide.

throw back Thursday to this past holiday season. one of our clients was looking for a way to utilize empty wall space in both a decorative and functional capacity. this wall plate display was a great way for our client to show off all her fine china without needing to utilize a big china cabinet.

anyone else ever run out of clamps? can't ever seem to have enough. these things are such a lifesaver for so many projects. working on a resin table currently and needed these clamps to hold down the wood to make sure it didn't float so that the resin didn't go where it wasn't supposed to. as an added bonus, here's a sneak peek of a project I'm working on!

woodworkers always have extra wood laying around after projects. we think part of the fun is taking inventory of what one has and trying to think of a way to use that left over wood. in this case, we had enough left over maple and walnut to make this serving tray. so glad we got to use the extra pieces and make something functional and beautiful from it!

A Little About Us

There once was a young man named Matthew who was known as a jack of all trades. He dabbled in all sorts of things from accounting to photobooths to insurance to pharmacy. Matthew always loved to create. One day he wanted a new bed frame and couldn’t find one he really wanted, so he decided he would build it himself.

Little did Matthew know that this is where his passion for wood-working would begin. Fast forward many years later and it has become evident to those around him that wood-working is a natural talent and passion for Matthew. Over the past year, Matthew felt strongly that this is exactly where God was calling him to be and founded his company, Rooted in Design. Matthew’s primary mission is to honor God with the talents he has been given.

Along his journey, Matthew crossed paths with a young lady named Alyn. She is extra organized and loves administrative tasks. Together, Matthew and Alyn hope to collaborate with you and your vision. Big or small, they aspire to make your dreams become a reality. The sky's the limit. We look forward to having you be part of our story!
