It's inevitable that we get caught up in the day-to-day aspects of life and jam-pack our schedule full of things to do. You may even be worried that you'll fall behind if you take a break, causing you to work harder.

When's the last time you slowed down?

Being in a state of chronic stress can boost your body's output of cortisol and adrenaline (essentially throwing you into a state of constant fight or flight), which dramatically takes a toll on your body. You can train yourself to slow down and lower your stress with some practice.

A practical way to do this is to build time into your calendar around important appointments, meetings, and commitments so that you can show up fresh and clear-minded. Create boundaries for your time, and don't put too much on your plate. Lessening the stress your schedule creates for you will help you have time to focus on other stress-lowering practices.

There is no short supply of natural remedies when it comes to relieving stress. Whether you're looking for a soothing foot massage or a refreshing spritzer of lavender oil, there are countless essential oils that can help calm the mind and soothe the soul. But among all these great options, a few key oils truly stand out as being especially effective when it comes to stress relief. Here are my top five essential oils for dealing with stress:

1. Lavender: lavender is one of the most soothing scents around and has significant stress-reducing properties. Its pleasant aroma helps to bring about feelings of calm and relaxation, while studies have linked its use to improved sleep quality and reduced anxiety levels.

2. Chamomile: whether you drink it as a tea or apply it directly to your skin in a topical oil or cream, it is widely known for its ability to combat stress and promote feelings of well-being and contentment. It has even been shown to dramatically improve chronic fatigue syndrome and irritable bowel syndrome symptoms in some people, making it an invaluable addition to any stress relief arsenal.

3. Ylang ylang: Ylang ylang oil has long been known for its calming, stress-relieving properties. Its unique blend of terpenes works wonders to reduce feelings of anxiety and tension. What's more, this extraordinary essential oil is also said to increase overall mood and sense of well-being, helping you to feel happier, more fulfilled, and more energized.

Have you ever heard of dry brushing?

Dry brushing helps to remove dead skin cells, and it also helps to promote drainage within the lymphatic system. It even benefits the circulatory system, which is responsible for the kidneys and liver. In the short term, dry brushing can lead to feeling more invigorated. But over time, it can decrease cellulite and help regenerate collagen. It's also a self-care practice that costs practically nothing, making it ideal for nearly anyone.

You can find a dry brush at your local health food store, Target, or even on Amazon. A good practice is to dry brush 1-2x a week before you shower when your skin is still dry. Start at your feet and move up the body, sweeping in circular motions—plan to shower afterward, and be sure to wash your brush.

Some people are shocked to learn that you can actually regrow certain types of food scraps. At first glance, a carrot or an onion may seem like an ordinary vegetable, but both of these foods are fantastic regrowth machines.

Simply cut off the top of a carrot or an onion, plant it in some soil, and watch as new roots appear within just a few weeks. What's more, many other types of food scraps can be regrown as well, including celery stalks, garlic cloves, scallions, and even cabbage leaves. So if you're looking for a fun and easy way to reduce your kitchen waste while also producing more fresh produce for your meals, start regrowing your food scraps.

Anyone can relate to difficulties reaching health goals you've set out for yourself. Approximately 80% of New Year Resolutions fail, and having too long-term of a goal in mind can make it so easy to throw in the towel.

If you have experience with this and struggle to keep your long-term health goals going, there's a simple pivot you can take to tackle your goal in a more manageable way.

First, it's imperative to get to the motivation behind your health goals. If you are hoping to lose weight, journal through all the reasons that goal is important to you. Keeping these meaningful reasons front of mind will help fuel your efforts.

Lastly, cut your goal into smaller chunks. If you ultimately want to lose 40 pounds, start with small goals that you will be able to see progress on in a shorter amount of time. This can be 5-pound increments or even 2-pound increments. Celebrate your small victories along your path to your big goal, and you'll find it much easier to keep on track.

Is your current routine for starting your day serving you well?
No matter how long it is, the intention behind a morning routine is to set yourself up for a good day. You want to walk into your day with a clear mind, a filled spirit, and a game plan for the day.

A few apps can help you breeze through your morning routine on the busy days you have less time.

The Shine app is a daily reflection space where you can find daily meditations, self-care courses, and resources to lower stress and anxiety.

The Calm app is great because it promotes meditation and mindfulness (plus, it pulls double duty for bedtime with sleep stories and soundscapes).

There is a slew of meditation and stress-lowering apps you can choose from, so browse your app store and find one that sticks out to you. 5-10 minutes a morning being intentional about lowering your stress and starting your day well can make a tremendous difference in the overall mood and tone of your day.

Could sauerkraut be the next big probiotic food? If you're looking for a gut-friendly option that's a little more interesting than plain yogurt, sauerkraut may be worth a try. This fermented cabbage dish is rich in live and active cultures, which can help to promote a healthy balance of gut bacteria.

Sauerkraut is also a good source of fiber, vitamins, and minerals. It has a unique and tangy flavor that can add some zest to your favorite recipes. So if you're looking for a probiotic-rich food that's delicious and nutritious, sauerkraut could be the perfect option.
