💙 April is Autism Acceptance Month. In this week’s Wednesday Wisdom blog, Autism Acceptance Month and Its Relationship to ABA, we explore how modern ABA focuses on supporting individuals, not changing who they are.

Acceptance means meeting each child where they are, honoring their strengths, and helping them build meaningful skills that increase independence and quality of life. It’s about support, not conformity.

Every April, the world puts a spotlight on Autism.

Education, awareness, action, and acceptance are essential keys to supporting the Autism community.

Please take time this month to learn 1 or 2 things about Autism. See one fact below!

Knowledge is power!

Fact 1: According to the CDC About 1 in 31 (3.2%) children aged 8 years has been identified with ASD

💬 The ‘Why’ Behind the Way: Total Communication

A common myth is that using signs or communication devices like iPads will stop a child from talking. In reality, research shows the opposite.

Approaches like sign language, gestures, and AAC (Augmentative and Alternative Communication) often serve as a bridge to spoken language. They reduce frustration and give children a reliable way to express their needs, wants, and ideas.

When children experience success communicating, they learn that their voice—whether spoken, signed, or supported by a device—has power. That success often increases motivation to communicate more, not less.

🎨 Fun Friday DIY ABA Craft!

Looking for a fun and educational activity to do at home this weekend? Try our **Color Sorting Rainbow** activity! 🌈

Materials: colored paper or blocks, small baskets or containers
Activity: Encourage your child to **sort the items by color**, which helps develop **categorization skills, fine motor skills, and communication skills**.

💡 Pro Tip: As your child sorts, ask them to **name the colors** out loud. You can also make it a game by timing how quickly they can sort or by asking them to create a rainbow pattern in order.

This activity is not only **educational**, but also **fun and engaging**, giving your child an opportunity to **practice important ABA skills while playing**.

Parents, we’d love to hear from you! Comment below with your child’s favorite color or a fun way you adapted this activity at home. 🧩💙

Every win counts—big or small! 🧩💙

ABA therapy helps children **learn new skills every day**, from **communicating their needs** to **trying something new** or **sharing with a friend**.

💡 **Parent Tip:** Keep a **“Win Jar”** at home! Each time your child achieves a goal, no matter how small, write it on a slip of paper and add it to the jar. At the end of the week, celebrate all the wins together! 🎉

🧠 The ‘Why’ Behind the Way: The Science of Motivation

It’s a common question: Why do therapists use reinforcers instead of just expecting compliance?

The science of behavior shows that reinforcement isn’t bribery—it’s the biological engine of learning. In the natural world, people and animals are more likely to repeat behaviors that produce a meaningful result. Even as adults, many of our daily habits are shaped by reinforcement, from praise at work to the satisfaction of completing a task.

For some children, especially those on the autism spectrum, simple social praise may not be motivating enough at first. That’s where external reinforcers like favorite toys, activities, or small rewards can help build engagement and strengthen new skills.

The goal isn’t to rely on rewards forever. Reinforcers are used to help behaviors happen consistently until natural motivation takes over—like the pride of doing something independently or the ease of completing a familiar routine.
