On this MLK Day, we honor the legacy of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.

Not just with reflection, but with clarity and conviction.

“Our lives begin to end the day we become silent about things that matter.” — Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.

At SASS, we refuse to be silent.

In building this business, we were encouraged to stay apolitical. Told that to be marketable, we had to be neutral and quiet.

But neutrality is not care. Silence is not safety.

We are not neutral.

We are emphatically anti-fascist, anti-ICE, pro-immigrant, pro-abortion, pro-gender-affirming care, and welcoming to all LGBTQIA+ individuals and allies—alongside all those whose safety, dignity, or access to care has been politicized.

We believe showing up is political, and caring is a form of resistance.

We see these same values reflected in our friends, our chosen family, and the communities we trust. And if you choose to use our services, we hope that this resonates with you, too.

SASS was built with love, clarity, and a refusal to stay quiet about the things that matter.

SASS exists for the people who hesitate before asking for help.

For the people who don’t want to explain about their appointment, or why they need a ride home.

For the ones who just want someone to show up when it matters.

On this day, we remember that Dr. King’s legacy is one of moral courage. Of speaking truth to systems that devalue and dehumanize. Of showing up. Not just with words, but with action.

And that’s what we strive to do.

💫 Our Meet the Founders series continues (and concludes!) today with a note from Sonya.

"We're all just walking each other home." - Ram Dass

I came across this quote yesterday on my Insight Timer widget and it really hit home on many levels.

It reminded me of a moment years ago, well before SASS existed, before I had the language or structure for what it could be, when someone quietly walked me home.

We’ll call her C.W.
She was a coworker with the office next to mine. We weren’t especially close at that time, but I was scheduled for a surgery and needed someone to take me home afterward.
I was estranged from family, my closest friends lived far away, and the idea of asking someone felt... heavy. It just felt like too much.

But for some reason, I asked her.

And she said yes.
Happily.
No hesitation.
She was there when I woke up from anesthesia, in the recovery room. A near stranger who showed up when I needed it most. I still get misty-eyed thinking about that moment.

She reached out to congratulate me after seeing SASS had kicked off, and I told her that I think of that time often – how she was there for me, no hesitation, and it's clear to me that she was part of the seed that became SASS.

SASS was born out of the simple, human truth that sometimes we just need someone to be there.
No fuss.
No guilt.
No “How can I repay you?”
Just a calm, trusted presence who shows up, stays nearby, and helps you home.

That’s what we do at SASS.
If you’ve ever struggled to ask, or felt alone at a time when you needed support—we see you. We’ve been you.

🚀Over the next few days we’ll introduce you to the founders of SASS Companions.

Hi, I’m Sharon. I moved six times before age 18, so I know what it’s like to be the new kid in town. After college, I kept moving – L.A., Denver, and up and down the East Coast for six more relocations to follow my career. One thing that’s different about starting over as an adult is how hard it can be to make friends. So now I'm the one who will invite you to sit at my table if I spot you alone, searching the room for a safe spot to land. I’ve reached that age when there are more frequent medical appointments and tests, some of which require accompaniment. After an accident permanently impacted my vision, I can’t drive with my eyes dilated. Asking for help is not something at which my generation excels. Our co-founder Sonya was there for my last appointment and we’re both committed to being a medical companion for anyone who needs one. Don't stress about your next appointment. A SASS Companion can be by your side and get you safely to and from the clinic.

When you are having a medical procedure that requires a sedative, you’ll need to make sure a family member or friend can drive you home. Here’s why.
