Right now, the Department of Education is reviewing how “professional degrees” are defined within federal student loan structures. Advanced Practice Nursing degrees — including Nurse Practitioners and Nurse Anesthetists, must be recognized as professional degrees to maintain appropriate loan access.
Because here’s the truth:
Nursing is not an optional workforce.
Nursing is frontline care, primary care, preventive care.
Nursing is often the difference between access and no access at all.
In rural communities like mine, Nurse Practitioners are often the most consistent healthcare providers available. Nurse Anesthetists provide essential anesthesia care in surgical settings.
We diagnose, prescribe, manage chronic disease, respond to acute illness and keep patients out of overwhelmed emergency rooms.
Most of us, and the professors who train us, relied on federal student loans to pursue graduate education.
If professional-level funding is reduced or restricted, fewer nurses will advance. When fewer nurses advance, access to care drastically shrinks.
This is not just a financial policy issue.
It is a PUBLIC HEALTH decision.
