February at VVS looked like this:

• Henry got his vision back.
• Dr. Bosiack’s “Brunson” TikTok hit 5.2 MILLION views — and climbing.
• We attended the Virginia Veterinary Conference in Roanoke to continue sharpening our expertise.
• We worked alongside incredible rescue partners.
• We welcomed new patients, celebrated rechecks, and watched our frequent clients walk in knowing our names — and exactly where to go.
• We passed so many pups on their OFA eye exams.
• We received the kindest thank you notes.
• We traveled to Charlottesville to support referring teams.
• And our entire staff showed up — emotionally, professionally, wholeheartedly — for pets in our community.

Growth.
Gratitude.
Impact.

This is what Veterinary Vision Specialists is building in Richmond. And we’re just getting started. 💙

Cherry eye is a condition where the third eyelid gland (also called the nictitating membrane gland) prolapses—meaning it slips out of its normal position and becomes visible as a red or pink bulge in the inner corner of the eye.

What’s actually happening?

Dogs (and some cats) have a third eyelid that contains a tear-producing gland. This gland is normally held in place by connective tissue. When that tissue weakens, the gland pops out and looks like a little cherry, which is where the name comes from 🍒.

Common signs
• Red, swollen mass in the inner corner of the eye
• Tearing or discharge
• Eye irritation or rubbing
• Sometimes affects one eye, but can become both

Why it matters

That gland produces up to 40% of the eye’s tears.
If it’s removed or damaged, pets are at higher risk for chronic dry eye (keratoconjunctivitis sicca) later in life.

Which pets are prone?

More common in:
• Bulldogs
• French Bulldogs
• Cocker Spaniels
• Beagles
• Shih Tzus
Usually seen in young dogs, but it can happen at any age.

Treatment
• Surgery is usually recommended, but the goal is to reposition and save the gland, not remove it
• Medications alone rarely fix it long-term
• Early treatment = better outcomes

Is it an emergency?

Not typically an emergency, but it shouldn’t be ignored. The longer it’s out, the more inflamed and damaged the gland can become.

Sweet Piper the Yorkie came to Veterinary Vision Specialists here in Richmond, Virginia, and instantly stole all of our hearts. 💕
She was diagnosed with a fairly deep corneal ulcer—shown in the first clip—followed by her post-op glow with a graft placed to protect and heal her eye.

And can we talk about her custom crutches sweater her mom made for her?! 🥹🧶
We loved every second of snuggling this angel and can’t wait to share her healing journey with you.

Follow along to see how Piper continues to heal ❤️‍🩹✨

We loved meeting Gretchen at her eye test, donate to this sweet puppy girl if you can 💖
