I was on a Zoom call this morning with a visibility coach when my chest tightened.

Not a little.

That familiar pressure that says:

“If you actually show up… people will see you.”

We were talking about doing Lives.

And I could feel myself pulling back in real time.

I’ve worked with so many people through this exact thing—
that moment where being seen feels like a threat, not a step forward.
So I did what I guide others to do.

I stopped treating it like something to fight…
and let it show me something instead.

And what hit me was simple:

Every major shift in my life didn’t come from forcing change.
Sobriety. Learning struggles. Career shifts.

It came when I stopped resisting…
and started listening.

This wasn’t fear to eliminate.

It was a threshold.

I remember laying in bed feeling completely empty.
My marriage was falling apart.
My career felt hollow.
And for someone who had called himself a militant atheist for years… I found myself whispering a prayer I didn’t even believe in.
That night I dreamed of a Native guide standing on a wide grassy plain. One by one, four horses ran in different directions. I didn’t understand any of it.
The next day at work, I could still sense him — sitting quietly by a campfire, as if waiting.
For four days I demanded answers in my head.
“What do you want?”
Nothing.
On the fifth day, exhausted, I asked something different.
“How can I help you?”
He smiled. And everything shifted.
What changed wasn’t the vision.
It was me.
For the first time, I felt like I wasn’t worthless. Like something greater actually cared whether I existed. That I wasn’t being judged — I was being invited.
If you’ve ever felt disconnected… unseen… fundamentally flawed…
You’re not behind.
Sometimes the shift begins the moment we stop demanding proof and start softening into curiosity.

There was a time in my life when staying quiet felt safer than being seen.
Growing up in an alcoholic, narcissistic family taught my nervous system early:
be small…
don’t need too much…
don’t draw attention.
For a long time, I didn’t just believe I was overlooked — I believed something in me was fundamentally flawed.
What I’ve come to understand, slowly and gently, is this:
My system wasn’t broken.
It was adapting the best way it knew how.
The real shift didn’t come from pushing myself to be more confident or more visible. It came from creating enough internal safety that my body could begin to unclench… little by little.

If you’ve done the therapy, the inner work, the self-reflection — and something in you still hesitates to fully step forward — you’re not behind.

Sometimes the pattern lives deeper in the body than the mind.
