Operation Reindeer Games

Operation Reindeer Games We are 4 volunteers passionate about giving back. We bring gifts to hospital patients Christmas Day.

Would you like to be involved with Operation Reindeer Games next year? Donating money is awesome and NEEDED, but there are so many other possibilities from helping us get connections with the right hospital people, getting some media attention, knowing how to set up non-profit status, making crafty things that can go in the gift bags (must be approved ahead of time), making cards, ideas for fundraisers and advertising for donations, creating flyers, etc, etc, Perhaps you have a talent you could put to good use. We would love to get more volunteers involved who are passionate about spreading magic at Christmas. Maybe even another holiday or two. What are you good at?

Operation Reindeer Games was a huge success on Christmas Day! All of the nurses were so happy to see us and take pics with us, and then tell us which patients of theirs, if any, wouldn’t want a visitor, so we respectfully skipped those rooms. For the remainder, we were split into 2 groups. Group 1 had Stephanie, myself (Monique) and Vinnie as reindeer, plus Jared as our elf helping with pulling wagons of gifts. We hit the even numbered rooms. Group 2 had Rian, Santa and Mrs. Claus and Brent (my Dad) as their wagon elf, and they hit the odd numbered rooms. It went quickly this way, and we didn’t have to overwhelm patients by squeezing 6 people in their room.

The response was extremely positive. Whenever possible, we would hangout a few minutes talking with the patient if they wanted us to. Steph was offering to put their adorable new Christmas grippy socks on, while I’d open up the blanket, and we’d hand them their stuffed reindeer and point out all the activity books, chapstick, and handmade card. (This year we got smart and put a label in each card that just has our social media names and our email address. Last time we were just shocked that anyone would want to stay in touch, but some do.)

Side note - there was only one patient in the Pediatric unit, a teenager in isolation, but we did drop off a gift so the nurses could give it to him.

We handed out 12 Nurses Buckets, and they seemed to love the healthy snacks, jewelry, sticky notes and syrenge pens. They also wanted pics with Santa and reindeer, so of course we happily obliged.

After handing out about 62 gifts, we took the last bunch over to the infusion center. They tend to know me there, so that was easy and fun. There were only 4 patients at that time, but we got to go around and see them all. A couple of the ladies doing chemo were so thrilled and moved that we would come there just for them. One sweet lady wanted a picture with Santa, Mrs. Claus and a reindeer. The other lady was half asleep, but she woke up as we walked by. She was by herself - getting chemo on Christmas. That has to feel lonely. But she woke up to the whole crew from The North Pole. She was moved to tears. It was so sweet. Since there were more patients to arrive later, we left all of the remaining gift bags with the nurses so they could hand them out.

The reindeer want to send a HUGE thank you out to all of you who donated. We couldn’t have done this without your generosity. Thank you for trusting us. And we also greatly appreciate those of you who made cards. They were so beautiful and just the right heartwarming touch. Thank you also to our elf helpers who donated their time to put gifts together and haul them in wagons around the hospital for hours. Plus, of course we want to give an enormous shoutout to Santa and Mrs. Claus for generously giving their Christmas Day to join us in visiting the patients. How truly magical!!

And yes, we are already thinking of next year. We will have much more time for fundraisers, and I truly hope to add another hospital like the kids unit at Kaiser. We have much to work on over the year so we can get some doors opened for what we do.

If you’re interested in helping out in any way - or just seeing what we accomplish, be sure to follow us here on Facebook, and our page on Instagram at operation.reindeer.games

If you’re hoping to be a reindeer, we’ve got a couple of people in line already, but it’s a big commitment and it means giving up your Christmas Day. Being an elf is a bit less commitment, and I might recommend that first so you can learn the process, help put gifts together, sign cards, potentially haul wagons on Christmas Day, and help with fundraising.

Enjoy the pics. It was tiring, hot, and sooooooo worth it in every single way. Thanks again!!

The reindeer and elves met up at the North Pole tonight to get all 72 gifts ready for the hospital for Christmas Day. We ate a little pizza to fuel up properly, then got our workshop going. We had about 10 people, which really helped get it done in an organized fashion. We all signed every beautiful handmade card, and even put a label inside with our email address in case they feel like keeping in touch.

Every gift bag is a woven, reusable tote, and includes a fuzzy Christmas blanket, a reindeer stuffed animal (or upgraded character stuffies for the kids), chapstick, activity book, color book, crayons, multi-color Christmas pen, non-slip fuzzy Christmas socks, a puzzle, a beanie hat, a signed handmade card, and tissue on top. 72 of these are ready.

We also made 12 nurses’ station buckets. Each is filled with a variety of snacks in individual wrappings - about 30 snacks per bucket. Plus each bucket contains a bag of fun stuff for the nurses to pick and share: a few beaded bracelets I made and added nurse charms to, a few keychain/charms with cute nurse things on them, about 8 syringe ink pens in various colors, and 7-8 silly sticky notepads designed to look like nurses items. Plus a signed handmade card with an extra special note of thanks.

Huge thanks to our elf helpers tonight: Darla and Mike, Matt, Kiki, and Heather. Plus a shoutout to my fellow reindeer: Rian, Vinnie and Stephanie. And of course a huuuuuge thanks to all of our donors - we simply couldn’t have done this without you! ❤️💚

WHAT??? We hit our goal in 1 week. ONE. WEEK. 😳 Unreal. We have some seriously kind and very generous friends and family. And most by far came from Facebook friends. ❤️

So now our patients will be taken care of on Christmas Day. Because of YOU. Thank you!! Since we still have a month, we would realllllly love to bless the nurses working Christmas. So everything we can raise over the $1500 mark will go to them. I’m told there are 9 Nurses Stations in the hospital, plus 1 in the Chemo/Infusion center. Not sure yet how many nurses work at each station that day, but I’ll find out.

Right now, in addition to donations, we need ideas for the nurses. Especially if you are a nurse or work or live with a nurse. We are kinda thinking of some sort of snack thing for a station to share, plus if we raise enough, maybe add a Starbucks or Dutch Bros card for each of them to enjoy later? Do nurses want sweet treats or something closer to meats, cheeses, and cracker tray, veggie tray, cold sodas? We want it to be something that they’ll actually dive into and enjoy. Thoughts?

Operation Reindeer Games UPDATE: We have raised $740 so far!! Just $10 shy of our halfway mark. Woooooo! Anybody willing to put us AT the halfway mark with a $10 donation? As it stands right now, we can visit and give an awesome Christmas gift bag to about 36 patients, but we are aiming for 72. Plus we would really like to surprise some nurses with a little Dutch Bros card or chocolates or something since they’ll be working on Christmas Day.

If you’re able to donate - literally if it’s $5 or $10, it all adds up, and 100% goes directly to getting gifts for hospital and chemo patients - here’s how…

Huuuuuge thanks from all of us to our many friends and family who have been able to give. It means the whole wide world to us, truly!!

At this point, we’ve raised about $700 in a week!! Wow! We’ve got some very kind and generous friends and family. But we know there are more who would like to donate, but maybe are waiting on getting their paycheck, etc. it’s still needed, and it’s literally the difference between a hospital patient having no Christmas vs. having a Christmas to remember. Please share this group page with your friends and family, help us spread the word that 100% of every single dollar goes directly to gifts for chemo and hospital patients on Christmas Day. Since we are not with a company or church, we have zero overhead, which is how every single dollar hits a bullseye.

This is what we are all about. This whole thing stated when I, Monique, used to dress up in silly onesies for my oncology appointments. One day I did it for Halloween, and did reverse trick-or-treating in my unicorn onesie, and I handed out candy. It was SO MUCH FUN that we started brainstorming ideas on how to go bigger for Christmas. We asked all of our friends and family to consider donating - even if it was just enough to cover one patient’s gift. We raised around $2000, so we were able to put together some awesome gift bags, and especially with Steph, our Bargain Queen, really stretching every dollar. We bought all the goodies, met in my living room, and bagged up over 70 amazing Christmas gifts.
We also all signed a bunch of handmade Christmas cards.

Then on Christmas Day, we rolled our wagons of gifts into the infusion center, and around the hospital floors, giving out gifts, but more importantly, spending some time with each person, letting them tell us their story so they could feel heard. Steph would put on their new fuzzy grippy socks, I’d open their blanket and wrap them up nice and cozy, and see what else we could do for them. I hoped that we’d leave them in a better mood, feeling loved. What I didn’t expect is that we also left in a better mood, seeing for the first time what happens when you fill a true need. People confided things in us. We were often told we were their only visitor and only gift for Christmas. One man was in so much pain that we debated leaving him alone, but gently and calmly came in. He was so lonely. He called us his Nina’s now and cried tears of joy. Every patient had a story that would shake us to our knees. We left CHANGED that day. We couldn’t wait to do it again. A couple months later we did Operation Puppy Love for Valentine’s Day, but Covid hit right after that. So it’s been 6 years, and we’ve gotten permission to go in again. It is what I am most looking forward to this Christmas. And if it goes well, we will look into getting non-profit status so your donations can be tax deductible. And maybe even add a couple teams for other hospitals and/or start collecting bikes for foster care kids who need them.

But we need YOUR help. We can’t do this without our elves (you!) making Christmas happen. Our goal this year is $1500, but I’d love to get a bit over that so we can also do something nice for each nurses station - for those working in Christmas.
