READ YOUR LABELS.

Endocrine disruptors can be harmful to our health and can be found ALL around us.

According to the National Institute of Health, "Many chemicals, both natural and man-made, may mimic or interfere with the body’s hormones, known as the endocrine system... called endocrine disruptors, these chemicals are linked with developmental, reproductive, brain, immune, and other problems.

Endocrine disruptors are found in many everyday products, including some plastic bottles and containers, liners of metal food cans, detergents, flame retardants, food, toys, cosmetics, and pesticides."

Artificial fragrances and other ingredients like parabens and even aluminum in deodorant can harm our health. These are all endocrine disruptors.

Symptoms may include:
✅ Fatigue
✅ Weakness
✅ ADHD symptoms
✅ Reduced ability to handle stress
✅ Altered nervous system function
…to name a few

If you aren't feeling yourself (lacking joy, trouble sleeping, constant anxiety, etc.) and have been told that anti-depressants are the only way forward, then I encourage you to reach out to us.

We aren't "anti" SSRI/SNRIs (the most common medications use for anxiety or depression), but there is likely a deeper root issue that could be addressed with your gut or hormones.

Do you know these four "feel good" hormones?

✍️ Dopamine: motivates us to take action to achieve the goal so we can experience the pleasure of the reward.

💛 Oxytocin: ‘bonding” hormone which helps you create stronger bonds/trust/relationships with people around you. Oxytocin provides feelings of love and trust, which is why relationships boost our happiness.

💪 Endorphins: help us overcome our stress and pain caused due to physical activities, which explains their association with the “fight or flight” response.

😃 Serotonin: boosts our mood and makes us more agreeable and sociable. Lack of it can cause irritability and depression. Serotonin is also sometimes called "the confidence molecule."

If we can get that issue under control, chances are you won't need the antidepressant and you can feel the full effect of your four "feel good" hormones. 😃

How to treat "adrenal fatigue" a.k.a. chronic stress (if you missed last weeks post about why adrenal fatigue isn't the actual name of this, refer back!)

😴 Improve the quality of your sleep - this is ESSENTIAL! Ideally, go to bed every night by 10 pm - don’t feel guilty sleeping in! The magic healing time for the adrenals is 7-9 am. You will get more healing progress if you can sleep in even a few times a week.

☕ Decrease caffeine and drink plenty of fresh mineralized water daily.

🥑 Eat a breakfast with protein, carbs, and healthy fat within one hour of waking every day. Each time you eat (meals + snacks), make sure you eat protein, carbs, and fat together. Never eat one macronutrient alone.

🌮 Please, STOP intermittent fasting! Don’t skip meals if you’re chronically stressed. Work on building cellular energy by eating frequently during the day.

🌿 Take adaptogenic herbs like ashwaganda and rhodiola rosea that help with both the stress response and thyroid.

💊 Before bed, take magnesium and have a blood sugar-stabilizing snack with protein, fat, and carbs.

🧠 Make sure you’re taking a good multi-strain probiotic.

👍 Consider taking desiccated liver pills to support both your liver and cellular energy (which will do wonders for the thyroid as well!)

If you have any questions or want to test your hormones, let us know! We are here to help!

Adrenal Fatigue isn't an actual diagnosis, but the symptoms are real. 😔

The popular term ‘adrenal fatigue’ is a catch-all phrase used when the body has been exposed to chronic, prolonged stress. It’s not an accurate reflection of what’s going on in the body, but more of a popular slang term used to describe the breakdown of metabolic processes.

The more accurate term is HPA Axis Dysfunction. ⬇️

🧠 The HPA (Hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenal) axis is defined as a complex set of direct influences and feedback interactions among the hypothalamus, the pituitary gland, and the adrenal glands.

🔹 When we’re stressed, we release adrenaline (stress hormone), whose job is to mobilize energy

🔹 When there’s no available energy reserve, the body begins releasing excess cortisol (which breaks protein ➡️ into fatty acids ➡️ converts to glucose = energy)

🔹 Problems start when this becomes a day-to-day function. The only way the body is able to use fat and protein as energy is through the release of stress hormones, keeping us locked in a vicious cycle of chronic breakdown and inflammation. Now, the only way we can break down tissue is in an inflammatory state.

🔹 That's why Circadian rhythm and therefore sleep, energy issues, weight, mood, and blood sugar issues arise because the “adrenally fatigued” person cannot convert their food into fuel to be used properly as energy. This adversely affects every other gland and system in the body.

Getting your body back into balance won't happen overnight, and the treatment is not one-size-fits-all. Ask us about The Dutch Test, so we can work with your unique needs.

Cortisol is a thief. 😨

In the functional medicine community, we often talk about the "cortisol steal." When we enter a state of stress (which is way too often in our modern world) our whole body is focusing on producing cortisol, and cortisol only.

We are designed to react to stressful situations like threats from predators and other aggressors accordingly. Although it’s not likely we will be chased by a tiger in 2020, our bodies are facing a different threat. Compounding modern daily demands like workload, paying bills, and taking care of your family seem like minor hassles, but our body perceives them as threats and thinks you're constantly under attack.

When we are in the overproduction of cortisol, we can't produce our s*x hormones- think of it like a crowded elevator full of cortisol with no room for an essential balanced variety.

In other words: chronic stress leads to consistently high levels of cortisol in your body, which creates a need for higher levels of other hormones (like estrogen, testosterone, thyroid, and insulin) in order to function optimally.

☕️ "Should I cut back on caffeine?"

I get this question A LOT. Caffeine has been made into a villain, but it isn't always a bad thing in moderation.

First off- common sense. Too much caffeine (more than 200 mg per day) is not good for anyone. But there really is no other blanket statement we can make as it affects everyone differently.

🍥 If you notice that you're jittery or anxious, cut back. Listen to your body! I have had patients mix half regular and half decaf so they're still getting their coffee fix, but with less of a jolt.

From a hormone health standpoint, there is some research that shows caffeine consumption impacts estrogen levels, as caffeine and estrogen share the same liver detox pathway (CYP1A2). One study even showed that 4-5 cups of coffee per day increased circulating estrogen levels by 70%. 😳

Women with a history of endometriosis, osteoporosis, and endometrial, breast, and ovarian cancers should consider consuming caffeine sparingly.

Too much caffeine has also been shown to impact libido by increasing S*x Hormone Binding Globulin (SHBG), which binds to testosterone and reduces its bioavailability.

➡️ Bottom line: 2 small cups of coffee per day or less and MOST women will see no significant effects (and you'll also get the antioxidant benefits). But, make sure to pay attention to your OWN reactions and cut back accordingly.

I’m ending the debate about the best women’s hormone test out there! The winner: the DUTCH test!

No, it has nothing to do with windmills, clogs, or cheese. 😜

DUTCH is an acronym: Dried Urine Test for Comprehensive Hormones. It is a simple but sophisticated test that looks not just at your hormones, but how your body processes and metabolizes them. The DUTCH test measures in-depth hormone levels for your:

✔ reproductive hormones
✔ stress hormones
✔ androgens (male pattern hormones)
✔ melatonin
✔ organic acids (markers for mood and nutritional balance in the body)

Plus, the sample collection involves NO needles and couldn’t be any easier: simply p*e on a piece of filter paper. (Okay… some people might get a little p*e on themselves, but still… is that the worst thing that can happen to you today?) 😆

If you’re interested in DUTCH testing, take the simple quiz pinned at the top of the page to see which test is best for you!

🥳 Happy New Year! 🥳 We are back and ready to provide you with what we hope you'll find helpful information. Let's dive right in 👇

You’ve heard the term ‘hormonal balance’, but what does it mean? 🤔

A lot of people think they must be having hot flashes, dripping in sweat, feel so depressed that they can’t get out of bed, or be losing their hair to have a hormone imbalance - but it doesn’t have to be so extreme!

It could be something as simple as...

➡️ you aren’t sleeping as well as usual
➡️ your period symptoms are worse than they used to be
➡️ you have adult acne

It’s all about fine tuning and finding what’s optimal for YOU, because you deserve to feel your best! You don’t have to wait to “come out the other side” by praying and suffering and hoping the issue will go away.

We want to help you get back to feeling your best! 💛 Reach out to us for more information on hormone testing, specifically The Dutch Test.

Ladies, before your period starts, do you feel like your emotions are out of control?

If you struggle with outrageous mood swings, it is NOT normal. You may feel like it is because it is so common. But it could actually be that your hormones are out of balance.

Check out this short video.

We get this question a lot ...
"Does it really matter if I go home at night after a long day and have a glass of wine?"

YES!

In short, if you are working on balancing your hormones, alcohol is something that you need to consider limiting. Here's why:
1. It increases your stomach acidity
2. It increases your cortisol
3. It decreases your growth hormone
4. It decreases your liver filtration
