Today, members of the Tokala Inajinyo/Sicangu Youth Council met our relative Leonard Peltier. He reminded us that we need to continue on this journey of advocacy and leadership and to be the voice for our people.
Though he spoke of being older now, he’s still committed to using his voice - a guiding force for as long as he can.
Not only did he encourage us, but we left feeling motivated, hopeful, and proud!

Our relative Leonard,
In 1998, you wrote the aforementioned excerpt, taken from your book, Prison Writings My Life is My Sundance. Twenty-seven years later, that eagle made its flight! We are writing to welcome you home and to express how happy we are to know you will get to serve your remaining time at home.
As you transition into this new chapter surrounded by family, friends, and supporters, know that your influence reaches far beyond what words can express. Your story has educated and empowered younger generations, reminding them of the importance of standing firm in their convictions; younger generations, such as us, a young group of Sicangu Lakota standing in solidarity with our Indigenous relatives in the face of adversity and using our voices to speak for those who are unable to speak.
We celebrate your return and acknowledge the sacrifice you have made. May this new chapter bring you peace, healing, and the opportunity to be embraced by your family and the community that has stood by you for so long. We offer prayers for wicozani and wiconi waste. Wopila tanka eciciyapi.
