So I did a thing…

I registered to be a Functional Health Coach. I’m really excited about this because it will allow me to help so many more people than I can as a macro/Neurotype Coach.

Processes lead to outcomes.

If you’re focusing on only the outcome, you’ll likely ditch the process once you get there.

Building lasting habits not only take you to the outcome, but far beyond.

When you're frustrated with your body, it's easy to find yourself wanting the weight to come off as fast as possible.

I get it. I've been there plenty of times myself.

Usually, it leads to restricting your food choices, eliminating your favorite foods or entire food groups.

These solutions seem like shortcuts but they often lead to more problems down the road.

It’s kind of like building a tower on a single block. At some point, the tower is going to topple because there wasn’t a strong foundation.

Just like a sturdy building requires a strong foundation, our nutritional habits should be rooted in basic nutritional habits.
What are the basics when it comes to your nutrition?

Eating MOSTLY single ingredient foods with foods you enjoy.

Eating enough protein (between .7-1g per pound of bodyweight, or goal weight)

Staying hydrated with enough water and electrolytes (½ your body weight in ounces).

Walking or getting movement throughout your day

Strength training to build muscle

Making sure you’re sleeping well. (As much quality sleep as possible for you)

Taking time for things that bring you joy so you can manage stress levels.

These basics often get overlooked because of how simple they seem and that they take time to develop.

And when things appear to take too long, we look to other methods, hacks, and programs that promise results in a condensed time frame.

But, skipping the basics often leads to common mistakes that hinder your progress such as being able to stay dialed during the week, but “going off the rails” on the weekends, overindulging at social gatherings or just dining out, failing at several diets because you feel deprived of the foods you love.

Causing you to take more time on your fitness journey because the results were unsustainable and short term. Which only leads to more frustration.

When a solid foundation is built, most people find that they only need to make small adjustments to what they are already doing to see results in their body composition.

And because the means to which they got there was sustainable, they are able to keep the results that they worked so hard for, ultimately and truly condensing time because that was the LAST diet that they had to be on.

These basics are a core foundation of what I solidify with my clients when they join my 1:1 coaching program. By prioritizing the basics, we create a sustainable approach to nutrition with the right ratios of foods that fits their personality. This is determined by taking a simple personality test. When you eat the right types and amounts of food, you’re able to be more consistent because you’re not fighting against your nature. Making it easier to lose body fat and keep it off without relying on extreme measures.

I also help build the habits that support your overall well-being, ensuring that they align with your health goals and work within your busy lifestyle.

Everyone's fitness journey is unique and what works for one doesn’t work for all.

Taking the time to understand your body's needs, preferences, and limitations is an important step toward developing a personalized and sustainable nutrition plan.

Many people are often surprised that the reason they are struggling to lose weight has nothing to do with diet or exercise.

One of the most common reasons for weight loss resistance is lack of sleep. Which I know may be tough to hear because it’s such a normal challenge for most people, but it’s true.

You might be wondering how sleep relates because when we think of losing body fat, we look to the direct actions of diet and exercise.

But, Sleep is a keystone habit that supports all the other habits that we want to develop to lose body fat.

That means that when you don’t get enough quality sleep, it impacts how you eat, how you move, and your overall choices.

Sleep is one of the most underutilized weight loss tools and you may have more control over it than you think.

You might be thinking, “I can totally operate on minimal sleep”

Which, you could be a part of the less than 1% of the population with this genetic mutation, but here are signs you need more sleep.

Mood swings
Low energy
Short temper
Food cravings even though you’re not really hungry
Poor performance
High stress levels

I know it seems more productive to push yourself to do more, but neglecting rest and recovery actually makes you less productive and less efficient.

When you sleep well, your body is able to recover and heal from the strains of the day, which makes it easier to go to the gym, eat quality food, and manage stress.

My client Matt is a great example.

Matt was having a difficult time losing weight and sleep was an area that was really inconsistent. He works as a VFX artist so his schedule can be pretty demanding and stressful at times. He also has a girlfriend so as soon as work ended he was spending time with her.

He always felt like he never had any time for himself to do anything he wanted to do, so when he left his girlfriend’s house, he would come home and he would stay up late into the night to unwind and finally get some time to do things he wanted.

But because he was up late, and lives on the west coast, he was always being pinged earlier in the morning because some of his coworkers and leadership were on the east coast. This impacted his food choices because making meals was perceived as one more thing that was taking his time, so, he often ordered in to save time on meal prepping.

As you can imagine, this didn’t help his waist line, so we helped him establish a night time routine where he could unwind and reclaim some of his time so that he could get better sleep each night.

He started implementing that night time routine with a consistent bedtime. This allowed him to take some time for himself to unwind. He slept better, and because he was sleeping better, he was able eat less take-out because cooking wasn’t as much of a burden, he had more energy, his productivity at work increased, and he felt more like himself again.

As a result, he dropped 10 pounds in 2 weeks. 🤯

It was a simple change to his day, but yielded a big return.

This is something that I work with all my clients within my 1:1 coaching program because of how it impacts the body and mind. The way I monitor this by looking at the amount of sleep they get and the quality of their sleep.

A common myth is that you just need more time sleeping. TIme can’t always be controlled. You might have kids or other circumstances that prevent you from getting 8+ hours a night, so I work with my clients to help them improve their sleep by making simple adjustments to their day so that they are getting the best quality possible.

Ultimately this is one way that I help my clients improve their metabolism so that they can drop body fat with less resistance.

I also help them find their unique ratios of foods, which is found by a simple personality test, to support their fat loss goals. This is important because when you eat foods that align with your personality and brain chemistry, you're able to stay more consistent because you’re not fighting against your nature, which makes it easier to reach your goals and maintain them for life, so that you don't keep repeating the same diet loop that so many of us get stuck on.

Lastly, I help them integrate all of this into their busy lives so that they can still enjoy the things they love while looking and feeling their best.
So if you’re interested in learning more about how I can help you improve your sleep to lose body fat, reply with the word ‘SLEEP’ and I'll reply back with a few questions to see if we would be a good fit.

Don't make this mistake in 2024...

I made this mistake in 2023

I focused way too hard on destinations and outcomes, and not enough on enjoying the process, that I robbed myself of so much joy, progress and gratitude.

I lived inside an “once/then” paradigm –

“Once I make more money, then my life will be smoother”

“Once I lose some weight, then I’ll love my body again…”

“Once I get things organized, then I can finally relax..”

These are just a couple examples, and that rippled across every part of my life. I was so focused on where I wanted to be that I forgot to be in the moment and just enjoy the process and celebrate the progress I made.

Things don’t always go the way that we want them to.

And I spent a lot of 2023 feeling frustrated about my life. Feeling a big sense of lack. I also spent a lot of time pointing fingers to things outside of myself as reasons why I wasn’t happy or meeting my goals.

Until it all shifted when I remembered that the only way I can control an outcome is by the actions that I take and remembering to find gratitude in all things.

By making adjustments to my diet, I was able to reduce some gut issues, which as a byproduct, improved my body composition, I noticed that my skin improved not only in clarity, but that my skin wasn’t as sensitive to sunburns as it had been in the past, and I genuinely felt and performed better in many aspects of my life.

It made it easier to keep the changes because I was able to see and appreciate the benefits.

Setting goals is a process beyond just stating it.

There are actions that will bring us towards our goals or away from them

When we do these action steps daily, we’ll eventually reach those goals.

For example,

I can’t control how much weight I lose in a given time, but I can control what foods I eat, the effort I put into my training, and how I take care of myself with my sleep and self care.

I totally understand how disappointing it can be to not reach the EXACT goal you want by a given time.

Maybe you’ve wanted to lose 10 pounds and you only lost 7. Celebrate it! Oftentimes, the pounds lost aren’t the only benefit that comes from showing up and putting in the work.

Look for those things and keep putting in the work no matter how long it takes.

Focusing in on the process is what ultimately helps you reach your goals because you aren’t measuring success with arbitrary numbers and timelines.

These processes are also what help you keep your results because they become a part of who you are, which is something that most people miss, ultimately leading them to repeat the same cycle because once they reach their goals, they go back to the EXACT behaviors that got them there in the first place.

I can promise you if you show gratitude for the progress you made and keep putting in the work, it's only going to keep the momentum going and create more progress in the future.

So instead of focusing so hard on checking off all the boxes to achieve and focusing on the outcome before you allow yourself joy, take a step back and take inventory of the things you have achieved already, and continue to emphasize the actions and habits that will ultimately get you to where you want to go.

Best regards,

Coach Traci
