I am currently designing a hip strengthening course for all of my friends who are post-partum, post-hip-replacement, and post-knee surgery as well as all of my therapist, hospital, and office-worker friends.

This image is *NOT* the tagline I will ultimately use once I launch this course, but after I wrote it I laughed out loud so I felt compelled to share.

I know my people will understand and that makes me feel swell!

Is Pilates ableist?

From my perspective, the answer is a clear and emphatic no.

While we see SO many pictures of (typically thin, white, young, female πŸ™„) bodies *performing* core-tastic athletic feats, Pilates is an INTERNAL physical and mental process which doesn’t always photograph well !πŸ˜‰

At their essence, these are the skills of the first 5 exercises of the pilates method. Can you do them? How do you feel afterwards?

Do they seem ableist to you? If so, I’m happy to hear all about it!

Every election cycle I like to ruminate on Joseph Pilates' perspective on the topic of how the human race can achieve world peace.

πŸ•ŠJoe was a devout pacifist who deeply believed that his method of exercise could yield a more perfect global union. The foundation of his rationale is that when we are in pain or too physically deconditioned we are unable to make clear-headed decisions (which we now have data to support as true).

πŸ’ͺ🏽 He also passionately believed that his method of "physical and mental conditioning" is the antidote to most physical pain and all deconditioned human bodies (I'd argue it's not the only but the best form of physical conditioning, but that's for another post!)

Thus, he determined, if we want to make better choices in our personal lives, we must be sound in both body and mind.

🌏 Here in the quote, he further expands his argument to include not just individuals but the global body politic. If we want world peace, he suggests, then we must require our representatives and leaders to also be sound in both body and mind, as well. It's a grand assertion, but one I'd argue is worthy of consideration.

You have balls, but do you use 'em?

Did you know that if you have chronic upper back/neck pain or discomfort you can use your pinky balls to release the tension in that tissue - which will help free up your movement options and expand your breath capacity (read: big inhales --> more energy)!

This series is especially good for:

- people you work at desk jobs

- people who carry the bulk of their weight in the front of their bodies

- new, sleep-deprived parents
