The power of positive affirmation. On a daily basis we have about 60,000-80,000 thoughts that go through our brains. 80% of those are negative and 95% are repetitive. Do yourself a favor- say something nice to yourself today. You need it. We all need it.

The Emancipation Proclamation, issued on January 1, 1863, established that all enslaved people in Confederate states in rebellion against the Union “shall be then, thenceforward, and forever free.” But for many enslaved people, emancipation took longer to take effect.

I’m beat up after a 75 min power vinyasa class taught by at . It kicked my ass and truth be told I took about 4 (long) breaks to get my breath back in order. Today was hard. I wanted to quit. I wanted to give up on yoga and do something easier. I was so tough on myself and disappointed that I couldn’t go the entire class. So why am I smiling? Because it reminded me of all the times told me to “listen to my body before listening to the teacher.” That yoga is an individual practice. You push yourself as much as you can or want and only YOU know if that’s enough. After the class I talked with several guys who reminded me of that same message: “You’ve won because you showed up and got on your mat!” It’s exactly what I would tell someone if they beat themselves up about having a “bad” class. I teach it in my guided meditation classes: positive self talk is so important yet it remains so tough to do. If we talked to our friends the way we talk to ourselves, we would have no friends. So let’s flip that upside down: talk to yourself the way you talk to your friends. If your friend had a bad class, would you tell them to quit and give up or would you tell them to come back tomorrow and try again? Do you tell yourself the same thing? Be kind to yourself and give yourself the grace you so deserve. Namaste friends. Today is a great day!

On Monday night I will be leading a men’s group discussion at in Folsom (located by Winco).

Men’s mental health has become a major passion of mine ever since I battled with severe depression and a high anxiety disorder which nearly broke me during the pandemic.

I have worked extremely hard (and continue to work hard) to get to a place where I’m comfortable in my own skin and can actually say that I’m happy.

I know so many men struggle with their mental health but are afraid to speak up in fear of being called a “sissy” and/or weak.

“Get over it!”
“Men don’t cry!”
“F your feelings!”

All that toxic masculinity has resulted in a serious men’s mental health epidemic where men’s su***de rate is now four times higher than women’s. FOUR TIMES!!!

And 1 in 5 men said they had gotten emotional support from a friend in the past week, compared with 4 in 10 women.

The one thing I have learned over the years is that men are not that likely to raise their hand and say “Yes- my mental health isn’t where it needs to be and I should do something about it.” Again, asking for help is considered a sign of weakness. 🤦‍♂️ 🤦‍♂️ 🤦‍♂️

So I’m asking each of you for your help: if you know someone who could use that push to start taking care of their mental health, please have them reach out to me or please strongly suggest/bribe them to come to Monday’s FREE men’s group meeting. It’s a great first step in realizing that they’re not alone. I am a facilitator- not a therapist- so my job is to create a safe environment where men feel comfortable enough to share….whatever they’re comfortable with sharing. Don’t feel like sharing and just want to listen? Great!

No one is making money from this and no membership is required. It’s called a KARMA class and is donation based. Bring $1, $5 or a quarter. I don’t care. Just be there Monday night from 6-7:30pm.

Off my soap box now!

Will you share this post with a man in your life who could use a little boost?

Kevin- as the years have gone by, our relationship has evolved and grown. I have come to appreciate all the time we get to spend together and don’t take a second for granted. Today wasn’t just a hike for me- it was an hour I got to spend with my oldest son in my happy place- nature. Thanks for another awesome memory that I will never forget. Love you and proud of you .kp !!!

I just completed a four day, 40 mile hike across parts of the PCT (Pacific Crest Trail) and TRT (Tahoe Rim Trail). I wanted to share the Ten Life Lessons Learned from this experience. Hope you enjoy it!
