MH First Community Crisis Response Two-Part Training on Saturday 3/28 and Sunday 3/29, 11am-3pm via Zoom.

What is community crisis response? This is a decolonized framework for mental and psychosocial distress response focused on de-escalation, safety planning, and helping individuals utilize the resources already available around them. If you want to develop the tools necessary for crisis intervention and simultaneously build a more empathetic future of collective care for our communities, join us.

Who is this training for? EVERYONE! You do not need any prior medical or crisis response experience to take part in the training. Adults of all ages and backgrounds are welcome. Whether you just want some tools to help out a friend or are interested in volunteering with us, this is a great way to learn how we keep ourselves and communities safe.

Join us in strengthening our collective ability to keep us safe and make a lasting, positive impact in our communities! The next Mental Health First Community Crisis Training will be on Saturday 3/28 and Sunday 3/29 from 11am to 3pm via Zoom. Register here: bit.ly/mhfirst-training0328

This virtual training is designed to empower community members with the critical skills needed to respond to mental health crises, support those in distress, and refer our community members to healing justice services within our neighborhoods.

Our purpose at MH First is to interrupt and eliminate the need for law enforcement in mental health crisis response by providing peer support, de-escalation assistance, and non-punitive and life-affirming interventions. We work to decriminalize emotional and psychological crises and decrease the stigma around mental health, substance use, and domestic violence while also addressing their root causes: white supremacy, capitalism, and colonialism.

Today, 2/13/25, we are pausing our volunteer programs—Mental Health First (MH1) and First Responders—to restructure, reshape, and retool for the future.

First Responders was APTP’s first program. It trained hundreds of community members to respond to incidents of state violence. While OPD no longer murders Black and Brown people with impunity, harm continues—racial profiling, police brutality, sexual violence, and wrongful incarceration.

We’ve also seen the growing need to respond to intra-community violence. This requires us to pause and rebuild First Responders for today’s political context.

MH1, launched in 2019–2020, was inspired by our co-founders' years of crisis response. It’s aimed at eliminating our people’s reliance on the state during mental health crises. We’ve heard your concerns and are restructuring MH1 to ensure it’s more sustainable and impactful.

We’ll pause both programs for 3–6 months to realign and grow. We remain committed to Healing Justice as a core strategy, led by Black leadership.

Thank you for your continued support. Together, we’ll rebuild stronger.
