Mike, Shannon's husband, has set up this Fund to help raise money for Shannon and her family during this time for her Medical Treatment. Diagnosed over three years ago with Stage IV breast cancer, I am blessed to have come through a double mastectomy and the spread of cancer to my ovaries, brain and adrenal glands, not to mention countless sessions of chemo. I think part of the successes have come from my belief that attitude is almost everything. In fact, my adopted mantra as I’ve wrestled with this disease is “we can’t control what happens to us, but we can control how we respond to it.” I’ve been told that this has been an inspiration to others as they’ve walked alongside me in this journey. That attitude will once again be tested now that my back has been invaded. I’m told now that the severity of this latest metastasis requires a more aggressive approach as we continue this fight. My oncologists have prescribed a new more radical path of treatment. This calls for a combination of traditional and more intensive integrated treatment. Medical experience with this treatment is positive; unfortunately, it is not covered by insurance. Since we are unable to cover the costs of treatment on our own, we are boldly—and with faith—asking for help from family and friends and others at this important crossroad in our lives. If you are reading this, chances are that our lives have intersected at some point, hopefully in a good way! Without shame or expectation, I simply wanted you to know where I am today in this battle. . .and to give you the opportunity to join in as I fight to continue to live and to make a difference in my ability to be a source of encouragement and hope through “A Spoonful of Sugar” and the cancer victims it brings to me. Woo hoo! Dr Nezami has brought Shannon's CTC # down from 1000 to 5 in only 4 months! Thank you to everyone who has made it possible for Shannon to be treated by the Doctor. We would like to relay a humble and heartfelt THANK YOU to everyone that has supported us over the last 6 weeks! Your support, prayers and encouragement we have received are overwhelming.
Here is the update and our plan moving forward:
The genetic therapy has yielded results that even the doctor is impressed with. Shannon’s Circulating Tumor Cells (CTC) started at 1000 and dropped by 30% in December alone. This has allowed Shannon to fight her cancer with renewed energy and enthusiasm. It also means her treatments have been reduced from 5 to only 3 times a week. The more her body responds the less treatments she will need and therefore the less costs.
We are so thankful for the generosity that has been bestowed upon us. Your gifts have certainly answered our prayers. We are reluctant to seem selfish in asking for your continued support in this fight. Again, the outpouring of love and support has meant more to all of us than we could ever express in words. We have received funds to cover Shannon’s costs through the next two weeks. The doctor is confident that as she continues to wipe out the cancer cells this cost will decrease.
