CALL to Local Action!
From Dr. Corrine McIntosh Sako: Hello colleagues!
I hope this finds you well! As medical and mental health professionals, we have a unique and powerful position to be agents of change in our local community. The Sacramento County Board of Supervisors will be considering a matter in our community that demands our attention, our voices, and our action and I hope that you and your colleagues are willing to participate.
According to data from the Sacramento County Sheriff’s Office, people with a mental health diagnosis who receive mental health services during incarceration comprise 63% (2,147) of the population detained in its jails - making the jail one of the largest behavioral health providers in the County, a service it is not designed to provide.
Instead of building a new "mental health jail" facility to expand the Sacramento Main Jail downtown, we are urging our local County Supervisors to invest in appropriate levels of treatment in the community and fortifying a comprehensive continuum of care so that our residents do not have to wait until they are in crisis in order to receive their mental health condition needs, such as:
- Establish a 24/7 assessment and intervention service center in order for law enforcement and first responder partners to divert people with behavioral health and/or substance use needs from incarceration and emergency room visits.
- Adding 189 subacute care beds that Sacramento County has been found to lack by a recent RAND study
- Adding 100 substance use disorder treatment beds for Medi-Cal recipients that Sacramento County has been found to lack by a recent RAND study
- Increase compensation packages to attract candidates for in-demand behavioral health care positions so that full and timely services can be provided to individuals while they are in community
Along with other businesses, professionals, and community leaders, I hope that you and your colleagues are willing to sign-on to a letter in opposition of a proposed "mental health jail" expansion to the Sacramento County Jail located downtown. The deadline for signing on to the letter is December 2nd, 2022, as the Sacramento County Board of Supervisors is scheduled to vote on the matter at their December 7, 2022 meeting.
You can access the letter here: https://docs.google.com/forms/d/e/1FAIpQLScWIL56hjKIkmrh-6n78_OEXFMlu_A66uSjFCAWMeU0OCGb6A/viewform
I also ask for you to please help us spread the word to as many colleagues and/or organizations that you think would be interested.
Please let me know if you have any questions or need additional information.
Thank you for your consideration,
Corrine
