Friends of Folsom CERT

Friends of Folsom CERT Supporting the mission of the Folsom City Community Emergency Response Team.

Folsom CERT is an auxiliary arm of the Folsom Fire Department made up of volunteers. You may have seen them around town in their green community emergency response vehicle and firefighter rehab trailer. The team plays a very active role throughout Folsom (cooling center, first aid, floods, fire watch, missing person searches, communication support), the county (staffing the CalExpo drive up COVID test site), and the state (base camp preparation at the Moccasin fire and senior wellness phone checks with the Listos program)

Another major purchase for Folsom CERT thanks to successful fundraising. Our 2022 Can-Am Defender with a QTAC EMS-R medical skid is ready for action. Reaching runners down a mile from the first aid tent at a 5k run will be much faster. At the Folsom Pro Rodeo it was used to shuttle resources between the first-aid/cooling stations. It greatly enhanced our ability to perform fire watch duty during the fireworks show by providing access off-road. We have lots of uses planned and look forward to discovering new uses. Many thanks to all the donors. Without you, such purchases would not be possible.

What does Folsom CERT do?

The Community Emergency Response Team (CERT) concept was developed and implemented by the Los Angeles City Fire Department in 1985. The Whittier Narrows earthquake in 1987 underscored the area-wide threat of a major disaster in California. Further, it confirmed the need for training civilians to meet their immediate needs. The program educates volunteers about disaster preparedness for the hazards that may impact their area and trains them in basic disaster response skills, such as fire safety, light search and rescue, team organization, and disaster medical operations. The CERT program was designed as a grassroots initiative and specifically structured so that the local and state program managers have the flexibility to form their programs in the way that best suits their communities. CERT volunteers are trained to respond safely, responsibly, and effectively to emergency situations, but they can also support their communities during non-emergency events as well.

At the direction of the Folsom Fire Department, Folsom City Community Emergency Response Team (Folsom CERT) can be tasked to provide emergency medical response, search and rescue, triage resources in times of emergencies. For non-emergencies, resources such as first aid tents, cooling stations for City sponsored events such as the Folsom Rodeo are often provided. Folsom CERT also responds for Missing At-Risk Person situations. During extreme weather events one may find Folsom CERT members making welfare checks on residents or working with public works to help reroute traffic and clear drains. In the event of a Mass-Casualty-Incident (MCI) or disaster, Folsom CERT will work under the direction of the Folsom City Fire Department as a ‘force-multiplier’ to free up primary First Responder resources. Find out more at http://www.folsom.ca.us/city_hall/depts/fire/volunteer_opportunities/cert.asp

In the years since September 11, 2001, Federal funding for CERT programs has diminished. Sponsoring agencies are hard-pressed to provide funding to keep CERT organizations going. Friends of Folsom CERT (FoFCERT) is a California 501(c)(3) Non-Profit which does fundraising in Support of the Folsom CERT mission. 100% of the funds and resources donated to FoFCERT go directly to purchasing materials and services for Folsom CERT.
