Children learn emotion management and conflict resolution skills from watching their parents. Emotionally immature parents are unable be a role model and guide their children. Children learn to either suppress emotions or express them inappropriately.
If you were one of the parents then it helps to apologize to your child for your behavior. If you are an adult of such a parent, know that your behavior is shaped by your parent and try to improve on it.

I enjoyed being a guest on this podcast hosted by Shobana Sivanesan. This is in depth conversation about raising resilient, healthy and successful children and teens while fostering real connection. We discuss positive discipline, open communication, and empowering children and teens to make the right choice.
This would be helpful to parents all over the world.

We all engage in the year end ritual of reflecting and taking stock of the year as the year ends. We tend to focus on things that didn’t go well for us; may that be personal or professional failures or disappointments.
Step back from yourself and reflect in a nonjudgmental way. Be realistic and kind to yourself. There is always something we can learn from this exercise.

Christmas celebrations in non-Christian immigrant families is different. Some parents are OK with decorating a Christmas tree and giving presents to their children. Some are not.
It’s up to each family to decide how they want to celebrate or not.
It’s helpful to consider your children’s mixed identities. Also it’s helpful to move toward cultural exchange and building bridges between cultures.

Holidays are not merry or pleasant for all. If you have encountered or witnessed a traumatic experience in the past during holiday times, you are susceptible to get re-triggered.

We had a discussion on accepting compliments in our Shakti group. The common thread was grooming since childhood, especially for girls. Girls are taught to be selfless, caring and to be modest by brushing off their talents and contributions at home and outside. This is true for my generation. Compliments are given wholeheartedly too.
We can still change by accepting compliments graciously without feeling guilty or self-serving.
What’s your experience? Post in comments please.

Let’s be mindful of what we have; people and resources. Let’s come together by being kind to each other because like all other things; kindness starts at home and spreads out into the world.
