In the event of contacting 911 and you need to identify your location. Let the dispatcher know your direction of travel on what hwy and note what the last mile marker you saw is.
🚧 What’s a Post Mile Marker? 🚧
You’ve seen them along California highways, but do you know what they mean?
Post mile markers help Caltrans, CHP, and emergency responders pinpoint exact locations on the road. Whether it’s a crash, a hazard, or roadwork, knowing how to read these markers can make all the difference in getting help quickly.
📍 Top of the marker → Highway number & county.
📍 Bottom of the marker → Miles traveled from the county line.
Post miles reset to zero when you cross from one county to the next.
Next time you’re out on the road, keep an eye out—those little signs are a big deal when seconds matter. If you see no cross roads, over-crossings, or under-crossings, post mile markers will be very helpful.
