What do you think it means when your teacher says “your yoga practice is your practice”?
One of my favorite students recently asked me how many chaturangas I put in the sequences. My response, “it’s your practice, so however many you choose to do”. And then she laughed at me. lol
But it’s the truth!! Your practice is just that, YOUR practice. Let’s break this down…
The phrase “your yoga practice is your practice” emphasizes that yoga is a deeply personal journey, tailored to an individual’s unique needs, intentions, and physical capabilities rather than a standardized, competitive, or aesthetic performance. It signifies that the goal is to cultivate mindfulness, self-awareness, and personal growth, both on and off the mat.
🪷Intention-Driven: Your practice should be guided by your personal goals, such as finding calm, building strength, or managing stress, which then determines the style (vinyasa, restorative, power, etc) for your individual needs.
🪷Mindfulness over Performance: It prioritizes your internal experience and connection with your breath over achieving “perfect” or advanced poses.
🪷Authenticity and Non-Judgment: It involves accepting your current physical and mental state without judgment or ego.
🪷Off the Mat: The principles of yoga—such as awareness, presence, and non-harming—are meant to be carried into your daily life, merging your physical practice with your lifestyle.
🪷Individualized Evolution: As your needs change over time, your practice should also evolve to best serve you, making it a sustainable, lifelong journey rather than a temporary workout.
In today’s practice at .studios.us, though every ounce of my body wanted to move, I’ve not yet been cleared by my doctor. Setting my ego aside, I chose for the class to be an opportunity to observe, breathe, pray, and to simply take in the beauty of watching everyone’s practice.
Remember, you are your own best teacher. Listen to your body. You know what it needs. Honor that.
Namaste.
